PYEONGCHANG, South Korea The only thing more extreme than the Olympic sports is the weather here.
The Winter Olympics are slated to begin on Friday as temperatures in the South Korean city plunge.
While the athletes are prepared for the bone-chilling temperatures, worries about spectators catching hypothermia or staying home have been raised.
"The athletes are pretty well insulated for the hypothermia but, for somebody out here watching the sports, it can occur as quickly as 45 minutes," said Dr. Dave Weinstein, a physician with Team USA who specializes in orthopedic surgery.

If you do winter sports, you WANT cold. Nobody wants to ski or board on slush.
Mighty cold in the NE lately. You are so right about aging and the effects of cold. I see children not wanting to wear a light jacket when I want a warm coat
Catching hypothermia? I never realized that was a communicable disease.
LOL
I go into town for groceries about once a week.
Past few winters, I’ll be dressed sensibly (imho) for the cold and walk into the store to see some in shorts/tees/etc.
I’m wondering ‘have I overdone it or are those folks just stupid ?’
Guess it’s always in the back of my mind: ok, so there’s a wreck or something on the way there/back and I gotta stand out in this mess for an hour and a half .. brrrrrrr
And given Murphy’s Law, the precise time you think ‘it ain’t happened yet and prolly won’t’ is when it will !
Or maybe that’s also advancing age talking . . . LOL
But I’m gonna stick to the old thing about ‘rather have it and not need it’
Its funny. When its 40 and sunny, I am outside working on my cruiser in a tee shirt. In soCal, if it was 40 people would be bundled up like they were going on an arctic snow mobiling expedition.
“.....what about the various global strains of the flu that will gather at the Olympics?”...
Perhaps, just “maybe”, there is hope for Megan Kelly yet to go over there as she’s called in to replace Curic should she come down with the “Fast to the stool shuffle”.
Remember the 1980 Olympics, in Lake Placid, New York? Almost no snow! And this was BEFORE glo-bill warming during the “Coming Ice Age” scare!
The M*A*S*H episode with Hawkeye's Long Johns comes to mind.
We have a relative who fought in Korea; one incredibly tough Marine.
He is still very angry.
