White House Chief of Staff: Trump not expected to extend DACA deadline (Deportation not a priority)
Washington Post ^ | 02/06/2018 | By Erica Werner and Ed O'Keefe

White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly said Tuesday that President Trump is not expected to extend a March 5 deadline for when legal protection and work permits begin to expire for young immigrants known as “dreamers” — raising the stakes for lawmakers struggling to reach a solution.

“I doubt very much” Trump would extend the program, Kelly told reporters during an impromptu interview at the U.S. Capitol.

He told reporters that he was “not so sure this president has the authority to extend it” because the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects roughly 690,000 undocumented immigrants was not based on law.

Kelly’s comments come as lawmakers are trying to craft a plan to grant permanent legal protections to dreamers and resolve other aspects of the immigration system. Kelly also said he would recommend against Trump accepting a short-term extension of the program legislative patch.

Trump said in a separate tweet that “We need a 21st century MERIT-BASED immigration system” and added that current family-based legal immigration programs and the diversity visa lottery “are outdated programs that hurt our economic and national security.”

At the Capitol, Kelly reiterated the administration’s position that dreamers “are not a priority for deportation” presuming they avoid breaking the law.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has said previously that her department would not target dreamers for deportation. But Nielsen said in an interview last month with CBS News that DHS will “enforce the law.”

Nobody wants a DACA deal — especially in a midterm election year. All these people are doing in Washington right now is spinning the issue. They want it to be the other guy’s fault when no deal is made.

Just one question. Declaring that DREAMers aren’t a priority for deportation feels a little bit like … executive amnesty, doesn’t it?

It doesn't seem like amnesty to me. The priority for actually hunting down illegals is to go after the ones who are wanted for crimes other than being in the country illegally. But if "dreamers" are convicted of crimes, out they go.

If ICE agents come across “DACA Illegals”, they should deport them. Period

I agree with that, yes. But the search priority should be to locate illegals who are wanted for other crimes.

It’s already made its way to the USSC. That should come first and I believe it will come soon.

Trump knows all the dreamers are screaming at the Dems,

“why didn’t you take the deal?!’

“take the f’n deal!”

...but the dems won’t and the dreamers will feel the tangible jeopardy.

In the end:

Wall
End of chain
End of lottery

DACA with a 10-15 year path to citizenship including a requirement to complete legal immigration process before voting rights.

Watch. Learn.

So next they are going to shut the govt down not over the DACAcas, they’ve already turned that down, but on behalf of people who aren’t even here yet. This is like dealing with palis.

“Kelly is open borders anesty dirtbag. Always has been.”

Totally agreed. “Deporting DACA recipients not a priority” is from Kelly’s big mouth because that’s what he wants.
I’ll believe that it’s from Trump when Trump publicly says it.

Saying they aren’t a priority does not mean they won’t be deported, it just means ICE isn’t going to hunt them down to deport them simply for being here. DACA illegals have been and are being deported now if they commit crimes or do other things to get the attention of ICE. Haven’t you seen the tearjerker stories from the media?

The priority now is illegals that have been ordered to deport by a judge- tons of them have been living here, some for years. Illegals that commit crimes, or otherwise bring attention to themselves are being deported. Illegals with deportation orders can be and are deported within hours of being detained.

Illegals that do not already have deportation orders can ask for a hearing in immigration courts. Activists that support them have been telling them all for years to request the hearing to keep immigration courts backlogged to the point many are given court dates years from now. Meaning it can take some time to deport those illegals. The good news is new detention centers are being built and staffed, more immigration judges are being hired so the backlog will be cleared and all illegals can be efficiently processed for deportation at that point.

So no it is not any form of amnesty, they can and will be deported- just not considered a priority at this time.

I must respectfully disagree. Kellys open border amnesty comments since he was appointed DHS Secretary dont come from being military. He is against strict border enforcement, just like his fellow democrats are. His protege kirsten whatshername at DHS is another open borders dirtbag. Kelly like mcmaster will continue to undercut trump.

I understand your position, whether he undercuts Trump remains to be seen. The issue that I have going forward, is the simple logistics of trying to apprehend and deport anywhere from 3/4 to 1.8 million illegals.

One of the few sensible posts on this thread - that's exactly what's going on. The dems handed Trump a cudgel, and he's beating them over the head with it.

HeH! - I've been looking at it the same way. They like the Palis don't want a solution - just never ending grievances to use for leverage.

WaPo.

Trump and DHS saying they’re not going to “target” DACA ites nothing to worry about. Most aren’t even registered, so how would ICE or anyone else know their status anyway?

Trump said even during the campaign he would FIRST go for the gang members and criminals. And then on down the list.

The idea that TRump or Kelly is “publicly nudging the DHS not to remove young illegals whose eligibility is lapsed” is just not factual.

Most don’t have all that stuff. Only about 670,000 have even registered, and without registering, they can’t have any legal status at all.

Kelly has previously made a number of public and private comments that contradict trumps positions on various issues. The most recent was kellys stupid comments last week that Trump is “ evolving on the need for the Wall”. Trump came out the next day and stated he had not evolved at all.

Kelly will do nothing to favor trumps positions he disagrees with. He has priors.

As for deportations, the way you get aliens to leave is you start doing massive workplace enforcement, round up every illegal in sight regardless of priority. The fear factor will cause many to leave voluntarily. Kelly does everything he can to reassure illegals that they wont be deported, just like his moronic statement today. The exact opposite strategy that Homan ICE director does to put the fear to work in favor of what the objective is. Kelly is a disgrace. I would never have hired this dirtbag democrat. The sooner trump catches on that obama holdovers and deep state sympathizers are not his friends, the better off he will be.

He did end it!!! Don’t you read the news? He ended it as of Sept.5 2017~ And an ahole judge “overturned” it and the fedgov made an request to SCOTUS to expedite the case and SCOTUS agreed to.

AND it expires for good March 5. Hopefully the Dem(on)s and any Repukes who are black hats will refuse to put forward any decent immigration bill and so the DACA crap will just die on its on March 5. Less than 4 weeks away.

Trump extended the Obama timeline 6 months. Not only that, but he went against his belief that Obama even had the authority to issue a Daca, and did the same thing.
