We all know exactly what happens when the government can no longer afford to make these payments: Venezuela! People starving, riots in the streets, runaway inflation, crime, etc. The people loved Hugo Chavez as long as they were getting their checks. I’m just sorry he died before he could see the end results of his actions.
More $$ for cigarettes, alcohol, pot, drugs, Big Macs, lottery tickets, gambling, smartphones, full package cable TV and other vices. Many are ‘poor’ because of ignorant habits and discipline. If I were mayor I’d work a deal with Dave Ramsey and citizens could enroll for a free Financial Peace University course. A whole lot cheaper and way more effective than a welfare giveaway. Pure stupidity.

Is and always has been a pit, though I do enjoy going to their lovely ballpark and arena they built, and which helped bankrupt the city, though it was the public pensions that primarily did them in. The problem is what happens when the money runs out? Who gets to fund this baic income program then? Also, do the people who benefit from the program have to work in order to receive the universal basic income? Answer to question 1 . . . the citizens of Stockton and the answer to question 2 is no.

Exactly. If we made the deal that in exchange for X amount of dollars given (in various forms) under various welfare programs, we will instead give X+Y amount of money, that will be non-negotiable, and will only go up as a cost of living increase, blah blah blah, I guarantee they would jump at it.

Even if we said we were going to get rid of all the government jobs and infrastructure regulating the welfare state, they would still want it.
Then, like Charlie Brown and Lucy with the football, they would break it up into tiers. More money for this group. Next they would begin adding things back in. “Oh, you get universal income? You are eligible for (Insert government supplied Internet access/computers/cars/whatever)!”
Followed up with “This isn’t enough money for these people to live on, we have to give them more...”
God, this makes me angry. If these people want to spend their own money to do some stupid, comically useless, money wasting giveaway, power to them. But we know it won’t stop there.
Yes...but what is equally likely is they will fudge the results of this, openly lie and deceive, and figure out a way to get some kind of local/state/federal program going on it and we are off to the races.
I am with you, though. If done honestly, we could openly laugh at these idiots who want to give their money away.

Of course - as is so boilerplate for Socialists - not only do they have no idea where the money for their handouts (which are just another link in the chain of slavery to government) will come from, they 100% ignore the root causes of the so-called “need” they see government as the fix for.
Stockton is a hellhole for a reason - bordering on the $h_tHole status so infamously applied to several 3rd World nations of recent.
Stockton is the glaring example of what happens when government enables and promotes the welfare system, provides “education” that neither educates or empowers, and when government still bills itself as the answer.
