"It's a big deal": Melting ice sheets are accelerating sea level rise
CBS "News" ^ | February 13, 2018

Melting ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are speeding up the already fast pace of sea level rise, new satellite research shows. At the current rate, the world's oceans on average will be at least 2 feet - - 61 centimeters - - higher by the end of the century compared to today, according to researchers who published in Monday's Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.

The research, based on 25 years of satellite data, shows that pace has quickened, mainly from the melting of massive ice sheets. It confirms scientists' computer simulations and is in line with predictions from the United Nations, which releases regular climate change reports.

"It's a big deal" because the projected sea level rise is a conservative estimate and it is likely to be higher, said lead author Steve Nerem of the University of Colorado.

Global sea levels were stable for about 3,000 years until the 20th century when they rose and then accelerated due to global warming caused by the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, said climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute in Germany, who wasn't part of the study.

If sea levels were falling we’d (conservatives) would get excoriated for that, too.

This is really bad news. I hate the beach but my wife really likes it for some reason. I moved 500 miles to be further from the coast. Now it will be closer. Just like every time I move to get away from others they pick my area for development.

Then why is the shoreline where I spent my summers in the 1960s exactly the same as it was then (rocky coast with little erosion)? This is total propaganda.

"at the current rate"

It is currently 49 degrees where I am; two hours ago, it was 47 degrees. At the current rate, it will be 83 degrees by tomorrow afternoon.

Complete and utter fake news / fake science. Overall ice on Greenland is higher and Antarctica overall has been above average in snow / ice for quite a number of years.

...speeding up the already fast pace of sea level rise

So, what is this rate? Give us the old rate and now this new "sped up" rate, please, CBS.

Also, can you tell us how much the ice caps have actually melted? Since 1700? Since 1800? Since 1900? Since 2000?

I suspect you do not know.

Leave it to a guy in the landlocked mountains of Colorado to study the oceans.

Maybe he moved there to escape the rising waters.

“the world’s oceans on average will be at least 2 feet”

Heck, that’s no so bad. Algore was all in for a 20’ rise.

Where exactly has the sea level risen? And where explicitly attributable to more water and not movement of the ground?

Time for mandatory evacuations on Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard then I guess. When I see John Kerry and the Kennedy's packing up their mansions, I'll pay more attention
