On the same day that Long Beach-born, Korean-American superstar Chloe Kim jumped, flipped and twisted her way to a golden medal in the halfpipe competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the U.S. Senate barreled ahead with a long-awaited debate on the fate of young, unauthorized immigrants in America.
Now she and her gold medal are being sucked into the immigration fight unfolding in Congress.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, went as far as to bring a victorious photo of Kim to the Senate floor on Tuesday as he shared the immigration story of her father.
“Today, all across this country and all across the world, we are saluting this amazing 17-year-old girl and the skill that she developed,” Durbin said. “But let’s remember, Chloe Kim’s story is the story of immigration in America.”
Plenty of news media stories have been written about Chloe Kim and her family’s roots, and now politicians are capitalizing on what her dad calls “the American dream” in Washington. Durbin isn’t the only one.

Ok, I read in the article that it talked of her Dad’s immigration from South Korea to America to study engineering. No where does it say that he immigrated here illegally so if he immigrated here legally, how does this correspond to DACA, Dreamers and illegal immigrants?

What a scoundrel. If Mr. Kim and his wife came here illegally and then had Chloe as an anchor baby, perhaps Dick Turbin might have a point.
The Kim family’s story is my family’s story. My parents spent several years and a considerable sum petitioning the State Department to be granted LEGAL residence. We felt so blessed when we got our green cards and we worked hard in the subsequent decades to add value to this country as proud, naturalized Americans.
Comparing our situation with DACA “kids” and their illegal immigrant parents is comparing apples with elephants.
