The media did this to Nancy Reagan when she ordered new china.

Was the media ever concerned about Obama’s vacations with an entourage of hundreds?

You mean when they spent less than usual on Ben Carson, meanwhile trying to make it sound like it was too much?

$31,000 for a 12 or 16 place setting of good quality including chairs, delivery and setup is not outrageous.

This smells like a setup to me.

I don’t believe that Ben Carson craves an expensive dining set.

I bet HUD didn’t spend a cent. My guess is that GSA approved and spent the money. They probably leaked the story as well. Nothing happens to Federal property, buildings, rooms, maintenance or furniture in D.C., happens unless GSA gets their way and lets the money and labor do it.

How much did Kal Penn make when he was working under Obama there for a while? We taxpayers got a ton of benefits out of the President’s Personal Hollywood Liason and all the um liasing they did.

Dining room?

How about conference room?

And yes, office furniture is expensive.

In all such stories, it is useful to know the age and condition of the furnishings being replaced and the refresh cycle that is customary in an agency.

The typical government office looks like a dump. Most of the feds, even at the GS 14, 15 and SES levels, make do with old, battered desks and credenzas that rotate from office to warehouse (or the furniture graveyard lining the basement hallways) and back. If there is new furniture, it's usually because a new office building (which are rare in most agencies) was newly furnished, or because an older building got a long-overdue major renovation.

On Capitol Hill, it is not unusual to see new Members of Congress prowling the basement hallways looking for decent furniture that has been shoved aside. Some even visit the warehouse. As they get more savvy, they often get to know people in the facilities services who know the inventory and can tell them if nice or unusual pieces are in the warehouse. If you see something especially nice in a Congressman's office, he probably brought it with him from home, or sometimes purchased it himself for the space.

At a certain level, the status of official visitors and the use of a space for formal events requires an upgrade from the baseline fed dump ambience to something that might at least pass muster in comparable reception areas -- say, the reception and dining rooms at a downtown business class hotel. I would be surprised if Carson's redo exceeded that standard.

Frequency is also an issue. If we were driven by press reports, Democrats would do all the redecorating when they move in, and Republicans would be expected to make do with their worn and broken stuff without complaint. When was the HUD Secretary's suite last redone?

I wouldn’t trust MSM to report the sky is blue. If they said so I’d still go look outside to be sure it had not changed. In fact, more so because they said it.

The only reason this is in the news is because the liberal media hates conservatives, but they hate black conservatives much more. And a successful black conservative is simply torture to their puny brains.

Carson should blog images mimicking all the puff pieces the media did on Obama. He should write posts on his favorite ice cream flavor and do photo ops eating some on the new dinnerware.

It will probably give them a much-deserved aneurism. And Carson could then perform emergency brain surgery. While he’s digging around in their heads maybe he could find a cure for their liberal mental disease. If anyone could do it, it would be Carson.

To convert a conservative brain to liberal is easy. You just cut away half or more and lobotomize it. But how do you repair a liberal brain? Electroshock therapy? Who knows?
