BERKELEY, Calif. A median-priced one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco rents for nearly $3,300 a month. In the Silicon Valley community of San Mateo, the median home will set you back almost $1.4 million. Even in semi-rural Petaluma in Sonoma County, at least an hour drive from the city, rent for a one-bedroom can reach $2,000 and more.
To afford a place to live in the Bay Area, stressed workers and students are moving farther and farther out, commuting for hours a day from what used to be farm country. Others pile two and three to a room. In Los Angeles, San Diego and along much of the coast, the picture is much the same. For many Californians, the housing crisis has become a feeling of tightness in their chests and in their jaws, said Brian Hanlon, a prominent housing activist, because they have this sense that there is no future for them here.
But now the need for more affordable housing is provoking an intense ideological struggle, and in this left-leaning state, one that pits liberals against liberals. On one side are old-style liberals who lean against development and do not want to see construction cranes building high-rise apartments in their neighborhoods. On the other side are progressives who support such building efforts and focus on the effect of long commutes on the environment, particularly from cheaper exurban areas with little mass transit.

In some of the Worst neighborhoods in the San Fernando Valley, an Apartment starts at $2000 per month. No Parking, living in the slums and High Crime everywhere.
Now if you are an Illegal Alien with a couple Illegitimate Illegal Alien kids, EVERYTHING IS FREE!!!
They are right. There is no future there unless they change their ways and stop with the free stuff and illegals. But I don’t think that will happen.
A lot of Se Renta signs in my neighborhood- hard to see how these young people making 20 an hour get by here. Even I depend on a lot of OT to have walking around money after all the bills are paid. If I lost my job, Id be out on the street
What would happen to housing costs if they flushed all the wetbacks back to Mexico?
Hey liberals. Each of those millions of third worlders you love so much need somewhere to live, and they add to the traffic, and they use first world level of resources, and they breed like bunny rabbits which requires more housing, creates more traffic, more resource utilization, and more pollution, not to mention a greater strain on water usage, landfill usage, power usage, hospital usage, and packing already dubious schools with kids who dont speak english. i hope the extra votes are worth turning your cities into overcrowded slums, freeways into parking lots, and rural areas into never ending suburbs
(BTW, my son owns 4 rent houses, 2 in Glendora and 2 in Sierra Madre)
They are against houses and are building hive housing around train stations.
In the end Liberalism is, as always, a non-sequitur.
I took a job in the SF Bay area back in the 1980s. The closest I could find a home I could afford was near Modesto.
I commuted each day to Pleasanton, and then drove to where my work was (I was a service tech). Leaving home at 6 and not getting home until after 6. Made for a long day, but it was a job. I am now retired and the home is paid for.
It can be done.
“What would happen to housing costs if they flushed all the ...”
You sound like spirit of antichrist, but setting that aside, the answer is housing would probably cost more.
You couldn’t afford it today.
Thanks to liberals, CA is unlivable.
Its not just the cost of housing, there’s living expenses, regulations and high taxes.
All adds up. A wonder any one still lives there.
Mr.GG2’s daughter and son in law recently paid $1.2 million for a 1958 POS fix up bungalow in that area. He works for Intel. That house in Atlanta would have been $150,000 tops. I just shake my head.
Meanwhile, Jerry Geezer keeps screaming that we need the whole world to “move to” (i.e., illegally immigrate) California.
And he thinks everyone agrees with him.
The Liberal answer is ...... government housing.

Doesn’t matter, won’t happen. Dems will not jettison a large segment of their voting base.
This might be the future of the Denver area. Calis, people from other areas of the country, illegals, and third worlders including Muslims are pouring in here.
