Gov. Rick Scott signed into law Friday a bill imposing restrictions on gun sales and arming some teachers and school employees, a stark reversal of a two-decade push to ease gun regulations in Florida.
The National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit against the new law in federal court almost immediately after it was signed, contending the bill’s ban on gun sales to those under 21 was a violation of the Second Amendment.

Where was NRA and others working with Florida to discuss what might be constitutional solutions instead of popping up afterward with immediate lawsuit. Maybe they did, but I did not see much. The courts don’t seem in much of a mood to respect the 2nd amendment, so I don’t hold much hope on the NRA being successful.
The tack to run is to ask, “does the bill of rights only apply to people 21 and older”?
Governor Scott’s response should’ve been “let’s see what went so horribly wrong before we make decisions about how to make our schools safe”.
The NRA needs to pick it’s battles very carefully now IMHO.
This one is all advised. Age requirements have been allowed
elsewhere. The anti gunners are just getting started, the NRA should hold their powder for that. I understand the power of incremental-ism but there are much worse infringements coming down the track, count on it.
Correct - I think he knows it will get overturned. The Bill of Rights definitely applies to people under 21. He is doing it so that later he can say, “at least I tried something”.
With this issue, you pick your battles carefully. In the passion of the moment it would not have been wise for the NRA to insert itself into the discussion. Beside, the governor could have vetoed the bill and it would be a moot point. I believe the NRA will be successful.
This is a waste of time and money. Like it or not Heller specifically states that some regulation of firearms is legal and every attempt (and there have been many) to overturn age restrictions on firearms has been shot down in flames. This suit is dead on arrival. In the extremely unlikely event it were to reach the SCOTUS my guess is we have one possible vote to overturn age limits on gun buying. And I’m not sure even Thomas would be a safe bet.
We really need to put our resources to work in areas where we can win.
I agree. To tell the truth, I have not been impressed by NRA leadership the last many years.
The state mandated age requirement for gun purchases (Florida has not had one before) clearly violates the Florida Constitution’s right to keep and bear arms.
To tell you the truth being a life long (68 year) resident of Florida I am impressed with what the NRA has done for gun owners in this state.
How?? States are allowed to legislate restrictions.
The Bill of Rights expresses no age for the right to bear arms.
Where was the NRA in 1968?
What NRA should be doing is going after is exposing the mess Parkside was and is that permitted this to happen’

Besides examining the conduct ( cops told not to enter, other dept called and does ,those cops disciplined because they did) and arrangements of the Broward County Sheriff’s Dept made with this school district performance failures due to policy. A dramatic reduction in disciplinary incidents at Parkside were reported after the selection of Obama’s Chicago friend as school superintendent occurred which was publicly acclaimed.
Because that school district was receiving large grant money from Obama’s Attorney General because of those results. That many critics claimed encouraged criminal activity. Which should require Trump Administration US Attorney General beside find out why when the FBI knew that Cruz who should not been able to purchase weapons did. And review these grant programs instituted by the previous Obama administration.

Okay people. Gov. Rick Scott, has caved in to the leftist snowflakes and sign this bill. With this act he has proven that he does not care for the Law Abiding American Citizen. He has kiss the rear end of the Leftist Snowflakes and aligned himself with them. He is a what I call a SSPRINO (That is a Stupid Self-Centered Petty Republican In Name Only). This above all else shows how petty and self-centered a lot of republicans are, in that, they only care about getting adoration and praise for doing the easy thing to destroy our Country rather than to defend the rights of the American Citizen. He is a gutless wonder and has no testicular fortitude whatsoever.
Scott made a political calculation because he wants to be Senator Scott.
He is expecting he’ll pick up more dem votes than the rep votes he’ll lose because of this.
Agree. Scott was put in the impossible position of having to veto a fairly reasonable bill with a couple of unacceptable elements, which would have been political suicide. Now the NRA can do what is should do, file the suit and get the whole damn thing declared unconstitutional.
If Scott had a line-item veto power then I think a different outcome would have been possible.
The bill of rights is a straight jacket on the feds, not the states or the people.
The law will be ineffectual in preventing mentally ill kids from acting out - period.
When we were kids, 18 was adulthood. Now, with infantilization, the age of majority seems to be 26.
