White House vows to help arm teachers and backs off raising age for buying guns

The White House on Sunday vowed to help provide “rigorous firearms training” to some schoolteachers and formally endorsed a bill to tighten the federal background checks system, but it backed off President Trump’s earlier call to raise the minimum age to purchase some guns to 21 years old from 18 years old.

Responding directly to last month’s gun massacre at a Florida high school, the administration rolled out several policy proposals that focus largely on mental health and school safety initiatives. The idea of arming some teachers has been controversial and has drawn sharp opposition from the National Education Association, the country’s largest teachers lobby, among other groups.

Many of the student survivors have urged Washington to toughen restrictions on gun purchases, but such measures are fiercely opposed by the National Rifle Association, and the Trump plan does not include substantial changes to gun laws.

Rather, the president is establishing a Federal Commission on School Safety, to be chaired by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, that will explore possible solutions, such as the age requirement for purchases, officials said.

Raising the age at which firearms can be bought is a dangerous path, as doing so can result in it being raised again, and again, and again, obliterating the Second Amendment.

Yep, fine tuning the response. Lay everything on the table, then withdraw what doesn't work. Probably saw the reaction to the age restriction in FL and decided it was the wrong way to go.

It was the plan all along

Say what the middle wants you to say and then when it dies down, go back to plan A

Why raise the age ? These 18 year old are adults. They can vote. They can die in combat. They can drink in many states. I don’t understand this. We had a kook go into a gun free zone where teachers were not armed and have a field day. ARM TEACHERS!! TRUMP IS SO RIGHT AGAIN!! At least give teachers a fighting chance to save the kids!! Churches need to arm!!

Some people are just too stupid to get it.

Its wasn’t a flip flop, it was cover for it to blow over

Think of a lucy and the football

I trust our President, maybe you should as well

Art of the Deal.

Exactly!

Give Trump a little time to negotiate and manipulate and he does what's best for America.

That was the point, it was to buy cover so the CNN kids would go away.

You can’t fight kids in the public arena and come out a winner.

This was a smart move to divert it.

I wish others would understand

If we had you doing the negotiation we’d have the entire Bill of Rights repealed in no time.

That’s what always happens when people who know everything are in charge.

Anyone else realize that Trump is the first President to offer genuine solutions to problems ignored by the previous 4 presidents?

North Korea - Instead of appeasing them or threatening a no-win war, Trump simply went through China and got them to the negotiating table.

Same with school shootings. Honestly, a solution should have been discussed after the 1989 Stockton school shooting. Think of all the tragic school shootings that have happened since then. Almost 30 years.

Arming teachers and administrative staff is a no-brainer. But of course the NEA is against it because they need the issue and they want to continue to fund left-wing Democrats who'll keep the issue alive rather than solving it.

Before my mom's uncle turned 21 he was being shot at by Nazis. Fortunately he took out a couple of them and was honorably discharged. So what about people under 21 in the armed forces or the military academies who are already much more proficient and responsible when it comes to handling firearms than many older 0eo0le?

The first thing Trump threw out was arming some teachers...in other words....ending the no gun zones as soft targets.

Trump told everyone to submit anything they wanted...and Feinstein made an a** of her self with her response.

Changing the age will do nothing.

As one Congressman said....I have never seen a gun law stop a killing.

Good point. Liberals would like to raise the minimum age to 150.

No, Trump realizes that if supports any of the lefts gun control push, it would cost him his base. He knows if he is to have any chance to just hold onto the job in 2020, he will need every one of the 62 million votes he got in 2016.

Democrats will just raise it to 65+. Very few in that group commit gun crimes.

Some in Texas already have. My sister and another friend live in east Texas, and several church members are packing heat.

WRONG

Trump was never for those things he said

It was a rope a dope

It was to buy time and let it blow over

Trump knows he could not attack the CNN kids and this was the best way to combat that situation.

These are tactics that Republicans don’t understand because they would never dream of using them. Trump is showing us how to win in these no win situations. Attacking those kids would have been the dumbest thing anyone could ever do. Doing what he did was the smartest thing I ever saw a president do. It kept the moderates happy, that is what he needs. The moderates don’t want solutions, they just want to feel good and Trump did exactly that.

He knows the base will come back around once he proposes what he originally wanted to do. But the moderates would be focused on something new and shiny by then. Smart
