SEATTLE A federal judge in Seattle opened the door Thursday for thousands of immigrants to apply for asylum, finding that the Department of Homeland Security has routinely failed to notify them of a deadline for filing their applications.
U.S. District Judge Ricardo S. Martinez issued the ruling in a class-action lawsuit brought by immigrant rights groups on behalf of those who fear persecution if returned to their home country.{snip}
Government lawyers argued that they do publish some materials that inform asylum seekers of the deadline and that federal law does not require that officials directly notify asylum seekers of the deadline upon their release from custody. The judge disagreed on the latter point and said the former wasn't good enough.

Asylum for Brits and Canadians who make fun of islam
We are not concerned with the conditions in YOUR country.
We ARE concerned with the condition or OUR country.
IMPEACH this SOB.
Can US Judge (Federal) be impeached?
I'm unaware of such an oppressive regime in Guatemala.
Of course, the judge said they could apply for asylum, he did not say they had a right to be granted it. And that is where the Trump administration can prevent this from turning in to an "asylum-palooza" for Central Americans.
"Here" at Free Republic? I'd guess 85%.
"Here" in the U.S.? I'd guess somewhere around 0.0001% of the total population knows.
Correction: “...one’s home government...”
Me fail English? That’s unpossible!
“Thats one of the contributors to illegal immigration”
If that little phrase of yours has any meaning whatsoever, it implies you think that anyone in the world has a Constitutional right to enter the United States.
I can’t see any way to logically arrive at that conclusion, so whatever is making that link is entirely inside your own head.
According to US law right now, anyone in the world who manages to set foot here has the right to claim asylum. Nothing to do with the Constitution whatsoever other than its delegation of the power to regulate immigration to the feds, and making a claim doesn’t mean the claim will be accepted.
“According to US law right now, anyone in the world who manages to set foot here has the right to claim asylum.”
They can “claim” anything, and if it is for asylum, it has to be proved, I mean originally, according to the law.
Setting foot here mostly involves walking across the border, and, since all the Mexicans tear up thinking about Old Mexico, down to the third and fourth generation after arriving, they can’t claim asylum.
Anyone can claim asylum.
It doesn’t mean anyone is going to get it.
I tend to agree, seeing he’s first generation
