MONTERREY (Reuters) - Mexican left-wing presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has an 18-point lead ahead of the July 1 election, according to a poll published on Monday that showed him with a growing advantage at the start of formal campaigning.

Lopez Obrador, who launched his campaign on Sunday, holds 38 percent of the vote, according to the poll by Parametria, published by Reuters on Monday ahead of wider distribution. That compared to 35 percent in its previous poll.

A Lopez Obrador victory could usher in a Mexican government less accommodating toward the United States, where President Donald Trump has stoked trade tensions with Mexico and aggressively moved to curb immigration.

Lopez Obrador has backed the North American Free Trade Agreement, but his plan to review newly issued oil contracts sparked worries he will deter foreign investment.

Yes but not as faithfully implemented as in Mexico... the physical and ideological home of Trotsky after he fled from what he so enthusiastically helped create in Russia.

It turned out PAN’s plan to make Mexico “better” involved moving tens of millions of their criminal and peasant underclass to the USA. No wonder Fox has been so utterly deranged that his “plan” was discovered and that he’s been attacking President Trump so relentlessly.

I never understood the “compassion” argument. it is not compassion to create an underclass living in fear of the law, completely at the mercy of the criminals.

Indeed, it puts them on a plantation of sorts to be controlled by the corrupt elites for their votes.

Mexico’s southern border is much more defensible. English will become the official language. Drug cartels will be live fire training exercises for our Marines, Army and SOF Community.

We will adopt the Mexican voting ID program.

If President Trump closes the border and stops wire transfers to Mexico until Mexico handles the coming invasion,....

Great idea.

Needs to happen NOW.

Why can’t we go to Mexico and vote in their elections? And bring our guns to the polls?

“I have strong family and personal ties to Mexico and lived there for three years.....”

Though my family ties are much further south, Argentina & Peru, I well appreciate your concerns. In addition, a small circle of friends from the region provide ongoing personal insights. Most effective solution I see is for dramatic change in the mindset of Mexican leadership; nothing changes until Mexico decides to change.

Until such change is evident, the US is minimally obliged to exercise any-and-all forms of economic sanctions on Mexico. Co-equally, drug cartels and their follow-on criminal elements must be put down. Elections are coming up in July so it’s too late to effectively impress on Peña such a message. No matter as he likely all but sanctioned the Chiapas caravan. Lopez-Obrador - AMLO – appears to be a strong contender for the presidency. Sum of illegal happenings being nearly at a point of being a cascade. Trump would do well to send a friendly message to AMLO. While reputed to view the US as less than a friend, he’d do well to accept it as from a friendly neighbor.

Mexican multiparty democracy almost guarantees that the winner will have had twice as many votes cast against him as for him.

last election, it was 37-32-25 among the three major candidates.

people that mindlessly advocate for a third party in this country should take a look at what it has done for Mexico.
