More than 28,000 international gaming professionals recently congregated at San Francisco's Convention Center, where they tested the latest VR tech and sampled hundreds of games.
But some attendees, many of whom traveled thousands of miles for the annual convention, found the city streets outside inhospitable, the sights disturbing.
"My GDC feedback was simple: Stop hosting it in SF," wrote Emre Deniz, director of game company Opaque Space, in a recent viral tweet that received more than 2,500 likes.
San Francisco, Deniz continued, "is a dangerous city and America is not welcome to non western developers."
"The city hates us being there," he wrote. "We are worried being there, move it."
When asked by fellow Twitter users to elaborate on his GDC experience, Deniz claimed he intervened in a mugging, experienced racial abuse, "toxic dudes in events" and had his credit card skimmed. Deniz added that Airbnb hosts canceled last-minute on "heaps of people," and "scores of devs" had "rejected visas or (were) hassled by TSA."
"The downtown area felt really unsafe to both myself and apparently many other attendees," he wrote.

My favorite quote from the article...?
“My experiences were nothing more than being horrified by the wealth disparity.” - An Australian gamer
I can’t but help wonder how much money this guy gave up to panhandlers or some of the other “needy” on the streets. Me thinks not much. A liberal would rather spend someone else’s money.
Lastly, I wonder if his opinion of downtown SF would be a bit different if he got rolled by some of the “locals”.

He may have stepped in crap but, he really is full crap that he experienced all that...
Liberalism in full display. Sad to say, this is what Liberals vote for.
Not surprising. I live an hour from SF and it’s been many years since I last set foot in that mean city. I have no plans to visit ever again.
What some of the commenters say is that the area around the convention center is like the old Times Square in NYC was -- full of shifty locals who prey on obvious tourists and visitors.
You also have to wonder just how deprived a guy is who can fly from Australia to San Fornicato to attend a computer gaming conference. That’s not something you can do on paper-route money.
I misread the hashtag in your graphic on first reading.
I thought it was #LiberalShithole.
We only wish these things happened to him. What a pussy.
But hey, it is the natural endpoint of all the things twits like him desire in government.
Take a good look at it. If we give people like YOU, Emre, free reign, it would be San Francisco at best, and Venezuela or Cambodia at worst.
The convention center sits on a strange border zone in San Francisco between the office district full of highly paid workers, banks and coffee shops, and the Tenderloin which is full of drugs adducts, homelessness, crime and filth.

He might be an employee of a company that can afford to send him there.
.
Yet, gamers are typically liberal democrats.
Was there last week. I can affirm the area around the Moscone Center does have a lot of street sleepers and a good few panhandlers. At around 9:00PM I witnessed urination on the sidewalk and very aggressive panhandling in the area west of 5th and Market. This is the edge of the “no-go” zone I’m told. There are very expensive retail locations on Market Street to the east of this intersection and plenty of upscale hotels. It reminded me of New York City in the 70’s and 80’s until Rudy Giuliani became mayor. The tourist area near Fisherman’s Market was clear.
I also heard that AirBnB hosts were shafting people with reservations for an event that week.
And yes, there is something odd about the young multinational millennials wearing expensive clothing and accessories walking around in the midst of the deprivation.
I attend GDC every year. This year, I have to say the streets were the worst Ive seen. Shithole.
Ain’t “progressivism” wonderful?
