Washington (United States) (AFP) - US House Speaker Paul Ryan's shock retirement announcement marks the latest victory in a populist, anti-establishment revolution that brought its champion Donald Trump to power and is remaking the Republican Party.
Whether that spells longterm GOP success in policymaking, diplomacy and at the ballot box remains unclear. Trumpism is ascendant in Washington, but is a permanent Republican shift away from conservative orthodoxy and the establishment underway -- or is the party makeover temporary?

Too bad. Oh, too bad!
A crushing blow to the corporate lobbyist party.
It would be, if we hold the House & Senate. It certainly would be nice to see the House run by a Trump supporter & then see what all we could get accomplished.
By the way, is this to suggest that it was Ryan’s party before?
Well,... I’m not holding my breath.
If the House votes in a man that will team up with Trump, fine. If the House doesn’t we still have the swamp blocking for Leftists everywhere.
Buck Up, Swamp Schmucks. You still have Mitch.
Thank God. What is McConnell going to do? Fall in line, resist or retire?
The House back then knowingly voted for Ryan as he was snake, a lib and a Dem in GOP skin. I’ll bet they’ll double-down and vote for another Ryan clone who is in bed with the Deep State.
Trump is a definitely a shift toward traditional God, family, country conservatism. Pray it is a permanent shift.
So are the Ryan/Romney 2020 posters printed yet?
That’s my take as well.
Ryan left conservatism and fiscal responsibility long ago.
Until Kevin McCarthy gets in and thinks it’s his.
If Paul Ryan can’t remain as Speaker, because of Omnibus, then why did he pass it? Trump also signed it. I wish that is why he is leaving.
Ditch is still obstructing in the Senate and busy digging in deeper.

I love the way they try to spin “Trumpism” as anti conservative.
Trump is the most conservative POTUS ever. Ronald Reagan was a great spokesman for conservatism but Trump is a conservative warrior.
I wish it were so, but we have 50 POS GOP Senators who are in no way even supportive of their POTUS.
Bush League Republicans still control much of the GOP.
Right now they are manipulating AZ into electing McSallycain as the next Amnesty Senator from AZ.
