Direct conflict between Israeli and Iranian forces is increasingly likely in Syria as Tehran pursues a permanent military presence there, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis warned on Thursday.
Addressing a congressional panel before hosting his Israeli counterpart, Avigdor Liberman, at the Pentagon, Mattis said it was very likely from his perspective, because Iran continues to do its proxy work there through Hezbollah.
Receiving Liberman, Mattis told reporters that he saw no reason for Iran to ship advanced missiles to Hezbollah through Syria except to threaten Israel.
I can see how it might start, but I am not sure when or where, the secretary told lawmakers. Mattis then echoed Libermans warning from earlier in the day, issued through a Saudi newspaper, in which he said Israeli forces would strike Tehran if Iranian missiles ever hit Tel Aviv.

I pray this does not happen but feel much better with PDJT working with the Israelis IF the time comes.
With Korea apparently remedying itself in short order (with Trump’s great productive efforts), that’s going to leave Iran out there as the lone rogue ranger.
I suspect it’s about to get the full treatment.
Trump obviously doesn’t want to stay in Syria and Korea is making peace. Time for the MIC/Deep State boys to play their faithful Israel card, the hands down winner in all defense matters. Far more important than our own Southern border, for example.
No surprise....the historical intense hatred of Israel by Iran’s leaderships, their agenda to push Israel into the sea has never changed.....never will.
But Russians are the “good guys” right?
You missed the comma and the point. The issue isn't whether Trump can multitask since he could have never been as successful as he has been if he couldn't.
The issue is, the MIC/Deep State are desperate to start a war that mainly requires US support or endless operations like Afghanistan somewhere, anywhere, that will tie Trump to their tar baby so they can keep on funding turkeys like the F35 that grease their palms without actually putting their own butts at risk.
Of course, if you figure US troops should invade Iran in order to spare Israel the burden of doing so themselves because Israeli lives are far more precious than US ones, so be it.
Have a wonderful day.
But if you figure Russia putting Russia First makes them the "good guys", so be it.
I read this as: If Hezbollah launches an Iranian made missile at Tel Aviv, Israel will attack Tehran.
While I am certain the IAF can prevent power projection against Israel, I don’t believe they have sufficient heavy lift to do much damage in Tehran.
Unless they use nukes.
Leiberman and McCain are best friends.
When it gets to Israel striking Iran, I don’t know what the exact logistics would be. I believe there are nations in the region that see Iran as pre-nuclear, and view that to be very dangerous.
I would not be surprised at all to find some of them willing allies of Israel.
Iran is a pariah state. If it gets too cocky, I think the U. S. will step in and render it stone-age if that’s what Iran wants to endure.
We’re right where we were with North Korea. It’s time to step up. I don’t like it, but then I didn’t like was coming with regard to North Korea either.
Iran could decide to be a good neighbor to everyone, or put it’s own head on the chopping block.
Like Korea, I don’t think there are too many options open. Decent neighbor or pariah state,...
I don’t advise the use of nukes by any nation. I say this because once you’ve used them, you can’t complain when others use them on you.
This isn’t 1940s Japan now. We have a sophisticated network of nations that can lob nukes long distances. I’d like to keep that can of worms shut tight. If a rogue nation uses them, then all bets are off, and decent nations can then use them because they could legitimately claim self-defense.
I toss these comment out there, but I don’t think any of us has the perfect solution. Maybe Trump can pull off another miracle.
I’d like to see that.
The Middle-East is the last place I want to see go nuclear. Russia might be inclined to get involved, and then China and others might.
Escalation seems a very risky element to me.
End times prophecy comes to mind, every time I see something like this developing over there.
“U. S. will step in and render it stone-age”
The US has the heavy bombers with that capability. The US could destroy just about any nation with conventional weapons.
However, Israel does not have that heavy lift. While they could embarrass Iran, and make life uncomfortable for them, they could not eliminate their military, or it’s infrastructure.
Without nukes.
This is a job that should be done by the USAF. And it should be done soon.
Once Iran and Israel both have nukes, the conflagration will be Biblical. Literally.
And unavoidable.
I hear ya.
I agree with your points there.
You’re right on target IMO.
One added dynamic here, is the hatred of Israel by many in the region. They may see it as an ally against Iran, but that would likely be only a temporary condition.
For this reason, I would bypass my normal inclination to see an ally of ours do their own heavy lifting. IMO, keeping Israel out of conflicts actually makes the region less like a tender box.
If this were Egypt or Jordan, I’d expect us to let them do as much as they could, with us only helping as needed.
Both of these being more moderate states, I think we would want to see them prevail unless another moon-bat comes along like Obama. What he allowed to take place with regard to Mubarak was an example of what a blithering idiot would do.
IMO, the U. S. and the international community has a lot to gain by helping the region not to feel they need to develop a large standing army. That would be too easy to see get out of hand against Israel or some other friendly.
Our intervention is not fully understood by everyone, all these dynamics are in play when we do intervene.
Sorry Sara - it’s not Joe Lieberman.
They might have to.
A tiny scorpion is a threat to its much larger enemies only if it is willing to use its stinger.
If Iran gets nukes, they will use them. They are not for defense.
