Posted on 04/30/2018 9:47:07 AM PDT by Red Badger
The first patient I saw during my clinical rotations as a medical student was dying from chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Today, with treatment, the 5-year survival rate for CML is about 90%. But when I was a student, CML was incurable. It was an early and poignant reminder of the limitations of medicine that I have never forgotten.
We didnt understand cancer like we do now, nor did we have the tools to treat it, which meant there was agonizingly little we could do. With the national hospice and palliative care movements only beginning, our discussions with this man and his wife focused mostly on which chemotherapies might be able to prolong his life.
For all the advancements weve made in biomedicine since I was in medical school, answering this kind of question with anything approaching certainty still vexes doctors. Its a question that informs many others: How long should a dying patient fight a terminal illness, and when should that person focus instead on minimizing suffering? Is a day at home more valuable than a week in the hospital? Even a small improvement in our ability to gauge the life expectancy of a seriously ill patient could provide enormous value for them and their families.
A new algorithm developed at Stanford Medicine could help. Analyzing data from hundreds of thousands of anonymized medical records, the model predicts which patients are likely to die in the next 3 to 12 months. In early tests, the algorithm analyzed medical data of patients who had already passed away and correctly predicted their remaining life expectancy in 9 out of 10 cases.

Once the gov death panels are set up, they’ll know when to euthanize us
Guaranteed to make sure you expire on the earliest date possible if you voted wrong.
It just answers the question based on statistics gathered from other people, assuming that similar numbers lead to similar outcomes. No, they do not necessarily.
that’s the plan.
It is not the death sentence it used to be. Not all are as curable as she was, but there is hope.
The greatest advances in medical science have not come from Cuba or Russia or Venezuela. Socialized medicine does not pay for this sort of research. Yet, this research does treat patients where herbs and goat horns, finely ground, were recently the state of the art.
Liberals will destroy the profit motive and slow medical advances.
I have to find a new doctor. Found out over the weekend that my GP died last week of a heart attack while on vacation. You know your getting old when you start outliving your doctors.
“Once the gov death panels are set up, theyll know when to euthanize us”
Yeah, when you profess belief that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God.

I had a doctor.
But he died........................

So I have 3 hours and 45 mins left. I think I’ll take a nap.
Lucky you, I was supposed to go last week.
Death Panels use this information.
I can beat that!
The last time I checked my life expectancy according to the experts and all other parameters, including my lifestyle, I had been dead for 20 years...
Has AI been watching me drive the corvett lately??
Does it have OnStar?.....................
No... It’s an 04 that I bought in 08
