Parkland school cop Scot Peterson gets $8,702 a month in pension

ot Peterson, the sheriff’s deputy vilified for failing to confront the Parkland school shooter, has begun receiving a state pension of $8,702.35 a month.

Peterson resigned and retired Feb. 22, a week after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he waited outside as Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

Peterson began to receive his pension in April, according to the Florida Department of Management Services. He can receive the payments for the rest of his life.

The 55-year-old Peterson, a Broward deputy for 32 years, was paid $101,879.03 last year, according to sheriff’s office records. Until the shooting, he was considered a trusted school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas, according to annual reviews of his performance.

Scot Peterson: School deputy goes from commended to vilified after Stoneman Douglas shooting On Feb. 14, surveillance video showed Peterson waiting outside the school as Cruz prowled the halls with an AR-15 rifle. President Donald Trump branded Peterson a coward, and Sheriff Scott Israel began an investigation into his actions. Israel said Peterson should have “went in. Addressed the killer. Killed the killer.”

After the shooting, Peterson said in a statement that he heard gunshots but believed that they were coming from outside of the school and not inside the building where the shooting took place.

An attorney representing Peterson did not respond to an email Tuesday requesting comment.

Peterson’s pension payments are based on the total number of years he worked and the average of his five highest-paid fiscal years, according to a state pension handbook.

Health benefits are not included in the monthly amount, according to a Department of Management Services spokeswoman. That information would have to be provided by his former employer, she said.

A good friend of mine retired from Miami pd and makes a similar amount. I was shocked, but a small town tn cop retired and said he was sitting at 50K a year.
Saw a prepper show where a retired leo built a very expensive bunker.

What do Gov Scott and AG Bondi have to say, about this?

She seems to have gone radio silent. Especially after her “we know more than you know” comment.

Hmmmm.

“His pension is actually higher than his last year’s salary.”

In California the pension is based on the highest years salary. So the final years before retirement, all the other policeman or fireman would give up their hours to whoever was retiring, so they could have lots of overtime.

All of them were disgusting parasites just trying to bankrupt the taxpayers. I hope there is justice on this world for them eventually. I know they’ll have justice eventually, but I would really like to see it myself.

From Hit&Run Blog:

Understanding Peterson's specific situation helps shed light on the broader implications of public retirement costs in Florida and around the country. An employee like Peterson, who was by all accounts a typical deputy in the sprawling Broward County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) before his unfortunate rise to national prominence this month, is afforded a retirement package that kicks in at age 52 and allows him to collect a pension even if he pursues other work after his retirement. It's vastly different from what most private sector workers can expect to receive. The difference is premised on the idea that Peterson put his life on the line in a high-risk profession.

The payouts are virtually guaranteed, regardless of performance in the line of duty. Under state law, pensions can be forfeited only after a conviction for a narrowly defined list of crimes.

“From the looks of his pension, it seems Florida is headed down the same road as Illinois. I wonder how old he is?”

Retirement packages are like that in almost any blue county in the United States. Some teachers’ (especially administration) packages are mind boggling.

Defined benefits packages are a neutron bomb waiting to go off in this country.

“I was shocked, but a small town tn cop retired and said he was sitting at 50K a year.”

That’s reasonable ... retire at 55 from a blue collar job like being a cop @ $50K/year pension (assuming the employee paid into a retirement fund accordingly for 30 years) ... that gives them plenty of time to do something else to earn even more for a comfortable retirement.

This $100K+ and full health care is crazy for a guy that ran from a scene that resulted in the deaths of 17 kids!!!! He failed catastrophically at his job. Taxpayers should be up in arms over this.

This joker is making nearly as much retirement as a military O-6 (full colonel) with 32 years of service! He’s a retired school guard! Wow!

This kind of public pension extortion is rampant; for example:

CALI FIREMAN POCKETS ANNUAL MILLION DOLLAR PENSION
A Los Angeles fireman retired in his 50s with a pension of over 1 million dollars per year
with lifetime free medical benefits.

Job Title: Assistant Chief---Retired 2010---Years service 32

Rec'd from L/A Fire and Police Employees’ Pension Fund 2015: $1,164,022.65 annual

Lifetime Health Benefits $17,286.69 annual
