Helen Tai Wins Special Election For PA's 178th District
New Hope Patch ^ | 16 May 2018 | Kara Seymour

Democrat Helen Tai defeated Republican Wendi Thomas in a special election to represent Pennsylvania's 178th District in Harrisburg. The 178th district includes Northampton, New Hope, Upper Makefield, Wrightstown and Solebury. The special election was held to determine who will finish out former state Rep. Scott Petri's remaining term for the rest of the year.

Tai, the chair of the Solebury Township Supervisors, flipped the seat to the Democrats. Petri, a Republican, resigned at the end of 2017.

Tai defeated Thomas, a former member of the Council Rock School Board. According to unofficial vote totals, Tai won by 96 votes. She got 6,359 votes and Thomas received 6,263 votes.

In a victory speech posted to her official campaign Facebook page, Tai said she was inspired to run because "every person deserves an equal opportunity to succeed and that is not happening."

Tai, citing a "big blue wave" coming in November, said her victory shows people have had enough of lawmakers "not doing what's right."

Republicans are CLEARLY doing something wrong. I am sure excuses will be the main topic. But we are losing seats that we have had for decades. This is not right nor good.

96 votes out of 12,600?

Why no recount demands? THAT kind of “accept the bad ballots and double voting” is what loses close elections. And, eventually, all elections.

We have millions of fecund Democrat voters pouring into this country every year. What could happen.

You also have never trumpers still working as political consultants, rooting for Republican losses.

It’s a state legislature seat in PA. Who cares?

Got any info on turnout per party?

D’s seem to be more fired up this season and are turning out in slightly higher numbers.

I’ll bet there were 97 R’s who could have voted - but didn’t.

Typical statement this year. Very strange.

I’m sick and tired of your idiotic concern trolling. It’s patently obvious that’s what you are doing now.

For you to highlight this seat which has a PVI of D+1 and to ignore the fact that the GOP picked up a seat from the Dems on the other side of the State shows that you are wanting to spread panic.

https://observer-reporter.com/news/election/o-neal-flips-th-district-in-special-election-faces-rematch/article_4e2bcda8-58a5-11e8-acce-671ef6a777cb.html

By the way, the Rats held HD-48 for decades. In fact it was so Democrat that the GOP didn’t bother fielding a candidate there in 2016. In 2014, a GOP wave year, the Democrat won HD-48 by almost 20 points.

Last night, the GOP won it by 10.

To highlight a seat that stayed almost exactly with its PVI and the RAT barely squeaked by with 96 votes instead of the HUGE win in HD-48 is laughable.

Also the GOP held another assembly seat HD-68 by a 50 point margin.

“Throughout the campaign, both candidates
tread common ground in supporting gun control legislation”

The republican deserved to lose. And echoing another poster, this is a state legislature seat in PA, so who cares?

So what is your breathless opinion when the GOP wins ones of these special elections? Do you even bother to post when they do?

Or do you think every election should be won, and if you dont then OMG run around and panic?

Wow naps, or should I say noob.

TexasGurl24’s post must have really hit close to home for you to react all panty knotted. Why don’t you address what she posted instead of attacking her. You tell her to grow up yet you are the one acting like a noob.

This is FreeRepublic. We are supposed to address facts here.

Show us the lies in her post. Did the GOP take HD-48 or not? Was HD-48 a democrat seat for years? Did we lose it big in 2016 and win it big this year? Was the 178th as close as she says?

The ball is in your court.

(BTW, I would not have even bothered with this except for you calling her noob. Just because someone hasn’t been around as long as you does not mean they cannot know the truth. After all, you’ve not been here as long as I have and I’ve not been here as long as others. Except for Jim Rob himself we are all noobs to someone. So rather than attack a person just because they just got here maybe it would be more useful to address what they said. )

Bingo! The facts are the facts and that kind of venom and childish response is laughable.

This particular poster chose to post articles from communist Vox in the past as well as to come and crow after every special election how the GOP is doomed. I’ve never seen this poster put out a thread before a special election asking Freepers to go vote.

This poster is also wrong.

Every district in the country has a PVI. The Cook Partisan Voting Index, often abbreviated as CPVI or simply PVI, is a measurement of how strongly a United States congressional district or state leans toward the Democratic or Republican Party, compared to the nation as a whole.

HD-178 had a PVI of D+1. That means that in a given election, it would be about 1 point more Democrat than the country as a whole.

While it’s true that the seat was previously held by the GOP, the PVI was still slightly Democrat. Obama won big in this district as did Wolf. Trump barely won here. 50-47.

It’s full of snotty bratty soccer mom types.

HD-48 on the other side of the State was held by a Democrat. It has been held by a Democrat for ages. While Trump won big there, Conor Lamb won it by 5, and Tom Wolf won it by 1 in 2014. It was so Democrat that the GOP didn’t field a candidate in 2016 and the last contested legislative seat was won by the Democrat in 2014 by a 58-41 margin.

The GOP won it by 10 frickin points last night.

To ignore that win, and to also ignore the fact that the GOP also held HD-68 just to highlight a 96 vote loss in a PVI D+1 district is concern trolling.

The fact that a Republican had recently won that seat is the anomaly, not the norm.

That area is heavily populated by upper income whites, who tend to be liberals, and New Hope is very gay (and I don’t mean happy).

See, gerrymandering by corrupt left wing “judges” works. Liberal “judges” meddling in our elections really pisses me off. Where the hell is Mueller?

You people who don’t care about losing 41 seats are irritating. We won 5. Throw a party. Congratulations. Good grief. You celebrate losing seats. Never thought I’d see the day.
