The third arrival is here, safe and sound!

Memorial Day - to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Happy Memorial Day birthday American Robin baby no. 3!

Luv this. The world is a classroom. So much to learn. Even if I only catch a fraction of the teaching, I can shoot for a 100% attendance and attention record, no nodding off.

Is the memorial a fixed structure? Perhaps a floating memorial might make more sense? Just saying. Never been to Hawaii so I wouldn’t know.

Definitely should be grounds for a zot.

(We don’t need no stinkin’ facts.)

True, the Utah was sunk and left there. I just didn’t include her since she was no longer used as a battleship, just a weapons trainer / target ship.

Environmentalist assholes were complaining about the effect on poor mother Gaia a few years back from these leaks. They shut up pretty quick after they were shouted down by veterans.

[Last time a USMC retired was a docent and demanded respect. He looked like he just had spent the morning as a drill instructor to some boots. Everything about him was perfect.]

I wonder if they could have some sort of permanent posting like the tomb of the unknown soldier where a serviceman tells people to shut up and show respect.

And I will always hate and despise those who treat our country like it is a cheap trollop and the cause of all the world’s problems, and who hate those of us who served and love our country. Those of us on Free Republic know the feelings most of us old men living in their dotage, with memories of America’s greatness, honor and decency in the world. And it is a shock for this old man to see the streets full of metrosexuals, perverts, hate filled minorities and border jumpers, and the streets of our cities full of layabouts, drug addled thugs, and fat, tattooed women. Our young people wander our sidewalks and fill our businesses in a state of incomprehension because they have their noses buried in the fantasy boxes called smart phones. Yes, my friends. On this Memorial Day we are all far, far away from the Arizona and what it is, was, and is falling into rusted and brittle steel, just as our body politic is.

You Sir, are a gentleman. I agree with every word, and could not have stated the same as eloquently. We are witnessing our nation’s last days. When those of us who truly love our country are gone, those left will take her into the abyss..very sad.

Utah was a battleship, however it had been converted to a target ship during the inter war period.

I think the major difference is The Tomb of the Unknown is controlled by the Army while the Arizona Memorial is controlled by the National Park Service.

I’ve long found it fascinating that at Pearl Harbor you can literally see where the war with Japan started and where it ended in one place. I don’t think that can be said of any other war in all of human history.

I would like to go to Hawaii one day, and I want to see the Pearl Harbor memorial when I do. I hope that repairs do not take a long time.

You might enjoy my son’s Eagle Scout project biography of USS Arizona survivor Lou Conter; includes footage we took at the 75th anniversary observances in 2016.

Great! That means you'll remember it. Well whatever works. :)

And if you think that's crazy, wait til you see what the Apollo 11 mission was all about. You heard it here first.

The U.S. was desperately in need of resources and held innumerable scrap drives. Why would they just dispose of all that steel like that? Why wasn’t it hauled back to mainland steel mills?

The size of the scrap pile was astonishingly small in 2008, considering the amount of material removed. May well have used some for shipbuilding. There was zero evidence of movement, so if anything large was removed, it was a long time ago.

I was wondering why they didn’t haul it back in December 1941.
