HONOLULU — Damage to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu was worse than expected and it will remain closed indefinitely, officials said.

Boat transportation to the attraction was suspended May 6 after one of the vessel operators noticed a crack on the outside of the memorial, Hawaii News Now reported .

Tourists were allowed to disembark at the memorial after crews completed interim repairs. But the cracks reappeared hours later, indicating a more serious issue.

As the steel corrodes away and the ship deforms/slumps under it’s own weight the steel is hardened due to long term fatigue. Hardened steel is getting more brittle while the ship wants to deform ever more. The same phenomia happens to really old steel bridges (40 years plus). When you weld a crack in brittle steel, the weld is much stronger then the base material, an adjacent crack propagates.

It lasted the lifetime of most all of the WWII veterans which is something to appreciate.

I’ve read that the superstructure of the Arizona above the water line was dumped somewhere in the Hawaiian jungle.

Nearby on Waipio peninsula. We were doing some testin g over there and I was able to walk up to the pile of debris. Gazillion rivets in huge chunks of rusting iron. Nothing recognizable, it was not a neatly arranged thing.

From Google Earth, it looks like they have cordoned the area off now. Was not because of me!

The USS Utah’s remains are on the other side of Ford Island.

I would wonder if the closing is actually due to the threat posed by the ships weight collapsing against the colomns supporting the walkway above the ship? That’s the only reason I can think of for such a closure, risk to life. If that’s the case, it’s just an engineering problem to solve. Removing the existing walkway and replacing it with something supported differently. One-two years in design and construction.

Consider, the belt armor on the Arizona is 13 inch thick solid steel. Imagine the side of the ship falling away against one of the columns of the existing walkway?

I’d bet that’s the issue.

The ex-USS Utah is directly across Ford Island from the Arizona. The guns had been removed and the ship re-designated AG-16 (no name) after the Washington Naval Treaty went into effect. They would sail it out of the harbor for aerial bombing practice (with inert bombs). 46 were killed when she went down. Attempts to salvage her, a la the Oklahoma, were not successful, and she still lies where she was when the attempts were abandoned. You can see traces on Google Maps.

Isn’t there another battleship sunk near the Arizona?

Nope. All the other BBs were raised and put back in the fight, except Oklahoma, who was salvaged. Missouri is there now, but a bit farther down the channel

She has been down there a long time now. The ocean’s salt water, etc. have taken their toll on her, plus the damages from the attack. I figured one day she would probably collapse.

"There is a brow or an edge where the visitor ramp meets the memorial, and at that point, there's been some fissures located on the exterior," said Jay Blount, a spokesman for the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

At some point the number of pilgrims hits critical mass.

Arizona - sketchy etymology, sounds like "Eretz Tziona", the land toward Zion
Buried where she died. Isolated grave. Hawaii is the 50th state, which is the most isolated archipelago on the planet. 49 states can be accessed by land (the earth), but not the 50th. Access is by water (slow) or air (fast).
Aloha carries the same concept as shalom. Peace, hello, and goodbye. Birth and death is hello and goodbye.
The death of the USS Arizona was the entry point ("birth") of the United States into WWII.
The oil seepage of the Eretz Tziona is called the tears of the Arizona. She cries tears [of oil] from her grave.

Seventy years after 1941...

Japan, responsible for the death of 1177 souls on the Arizona, was struck by a great earthquake and tsunami ("mabul") on March 11, 2011. See the sounds:

Marcheschvan eleven - March eleven, '11,

70 years after the year '41. 41st day: "em". Rachel's yarhzeit, Marcheshvan 11.

In a lengthy Midrashic discussion of the heavenly response to the destruction of the First Temple, God summons Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and Jeremiah. Each of these greats offers an argument as to why the Temple should be rebuilt. God, however, is unmoved. Then, the Midrash relates, Rachel speaks:

where the visitor ramp meets the memorial... there's been some fissures located on the exterior.

A tomb is a womb, death and rebirth.

Same day the cracks and closure are announced, Tzippi the American Robin and her husband become parents! Two arrivals so far, one to go! Only discovered the nest at the front door on Shavous, already built, occupied and containing three eggs. The whole scene showed up out of nowhere, but that's only because we were oblivious to its construction. The birds flying in and out just blended in with Springtime activity.

A Building of the Heavens or of the Earth

There is a classic difference of opinion between our Rabbis regarding the construction of the Third Beis HaMikdash. The Rambam states [1] that the Beis HaMikdash will be built by man, more specifically by Mashiach. Indeed, its construction will be one of the signs of Mashiach’s advent.

Rashi, [2] by contrast, explains that the Beis HaMikdash has already been constructed by G-d and exists in the Heavenly realms, waiting for the time when it will descend to the earth.

Paradox solved thanks to the robins at the front door.

Moshe Rabbeinu...

Moses Atop Mount Sinai (1313 BCE)

"Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain...for six days. On the seventh day G-d called to Moses from within the cloud... And Moses came within the cloud, and he went up to the top of the mountain, and Moses was upon the mountain forty days and forty nights" (Exodus 24:15-18).

On the morrow of the giving of the Ten Commandments (see Jewish History for the 6th of Sivan), Moses ascended Mount Sinai in order to receive from G-d the remainder of the Torah -- the remaining commandments and the Oral Law. After being "cleansed" by the cloud for six days, he was ushered into the presence of G-d on the 13th of Sivan.

The kan tzippor is literally at the door.

"Mother robins may start incubating their eggs during the evening after the second egg is laid, or after all the eggs are laid. They sit on the eggs for 12 to 14 days."

American embassy opening: May 14th. After 70 years. 13 days ago.

Jer 29

10. For thus says the Lord, That after seventy years are fulfilled at Babylon I will take heed of you, and perform my good word toward you, making you return to this place:
11. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope:
12. Then shall you call upon me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you:
13. And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart:

רובין, רבינו

"Robin" appears only 14x in the Tanakh, 10 forward, 4 reverse. Marked by the bold in the text references below. The first two are here:

Gen 1

4. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness:
18. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good:

Three of four in reverse are here:

Isa 65:17-18

17. For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered, nor come to mind:
18. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for, behold, I create JerUSAlem a rejoicing, and her people a joy:

The first occurrance of the word in reverse is here, concerning the king of Babylon:

Isa 14.19. But you are cast out from your grave like an abominable branch, dressed in the garment of those who are slain, thrust through with a sword; like those who go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcass trampled under feet:

Birds are souls. Robin spells Rubin:

Recorded in over seventy spellings forms including Reuben, Ruhben, Rubin and Rubel, to diminutives and patronymics such as Reubbens, Rubenovic, and Rubinivitz, this is a surname of pre 7th century Hebrew and/or Germanic origins. There is some confusion with the origin, in that it appears to derive from the given name of biblical times 'Reuven', meaning 'behold my son', but it may equally share roots with the German word 'rubin' meaning the ruby, and a derivative of the Latin 'rubeus' - red. There are few straight lines with names, and this is a good example of confused origins.

http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Rubin

Confused, more like a blend. See a son.

It didn't occur to me to name Tzippi's husband, but obviously Tzippi's husband is Moshe. He's been doing such a great job - standing guard, and also now helping to feed the new babes. I can watch all of this from the front door window. The nest is only ~5 ft away, in plain sight.

a little bird told me
1.(idiomatic) I received the information from a source not to be overtly exposed.

Now about that third egg... I'll check tomorrow, but please keep the little family in your prayers! Everybody ought to be eager for the successful arrival of the last one.

USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor closed indefinitely

I look at it this way: why would anyone need or want to visit her grave after she came back to life? The grieving has ended. Tomorrow is Memorial Day.

The docking area doesn’t look all that sturdy.
It might be designed to break away if a boat hits it too hard or from a strong storm.

So will I. In the Fall of 1951 my carrier, the USS Antietam (CV 36) was on its way to Korea. We sailed by the Arizona. All hands were on deck. As we passed the wreckage we gave a hand salute. The entire flight deck and hanger decks were full of sailors in their whites. As we sailed past the Arizona we held our salute. All you could hear was our ship, the seagulls, and lapping water. After we were dismissed most of us still remained on deck. We younger men talked to the career sailors who were in WWII. And being sailors most of them served in the Pacific during WWII. In fact, in Korea those old WWII guys saved our asses with their experience and attitude. I'll never forget these men as well as those my age way back then. After our tour we came back to the US and stopped in Honolulu. We passed the Arizona again. The same eerie and quiet broken by the sea birds and the swish of our wake. Again there was a sense of reverence that most people who have not served, especially in a combat zone can ever understand. In a way I pity them. And I will always hate and despise those who treat our country like it is a cheap trollop and the cause of all the world's problems, and who hate those of us who served and love our country. Those of us on Free Republic know the feelings most of us old men living in their dotage, with memories of America's greatness, honor and decency in the world. And it is a shock for this old man to see the streets full of metrosexuals, perverts, hate filled minorities and border jumpers, and the streets of our cities full of layabouts, drug addled thugs, and fat, tattooed women. Our young people wander our sidewalks and fill our businesses in a state of incomprehension because they have their noses buried in the fantasy boxes called smart phones. Yes, my friends. On this Memorial Day we are all far, far away from the Arizona and what it is, was, and is falling into rusted and brittle steel, just as our body politic is.

To the left of the memorial structure lies the bow section of the ship.

Extending above the water line and another just below the waterline are the bases for the big gun turrets. The six big guns can be seen in this photo
