PORTLAND, Ore. — Two employees of a bakery in Portland, Oregon were fired earlier this month for denying a black woman service because the business had closed.

"Back To Eden Bakery" released several public apologies and statements following the incident, before letting the employees go. In one Facebook post, the bakery's co-owner wrote, "We are doing business in a gentrified neighborhood in a racist city within a racist state of a racist country.”

In one statement, "Back To Eden Bakery" says that according to its own surveillance video, a black woman named "Lillian", who is well known in the area as a "professional equity activist", entered at 9:06 p.m., after the bakery's closing time. Employees had also turned off the "Open" sign, but several customers (all white) who had already ordered were still inside. Two other white women who went to the bakery two minutes before "Lillian", and were also informed that the business was closed for the night.

Sounds like something Howard Schultz would do.

Yep. The whole civil rights movement was just for this. They get it all. Preferential treatment, and if anybody requires them to abide by the same standards as the rest of humanity, it's racist.

A racist bakery owner.

The employees should sue. The black lady was treated the same as the other two white ladies.

Since the owner fired the employees for treating the black and white ladies equally, the owner is a racist and the bakery should be sued by the two employees that were let go.

She should have kicked the door in and she would have been given a pass.

BlackLivesMatter made the bakery owner a fire-insurance deal he couldn't refuse.

I owned a small business. Closing time was after everyone who wanted to give me money left of their own accord. And I wasn’t selling stuff that was going to go stale.

If the same rule applies to all your customers, its not racism.

Its only racism if you treat black customers differently from white customers.

OK, but it’s not the white folks who are the racists.

The bakery's statement says that even though it does not consider the employees to be racist and that they were following the business's protocol of closing at 9 p.m., they were fired because "sometimes impact outweighs intent."

Sounds like grounds for wrongful termination to me. Of course, I'm not a lawyer.

in a racist city

I agree. Nothing says racism like the people of Portland Oregon. Biggest bunch of racist bigots in the country. Particularly the owner of that bakery.

In the statement "Back To Eden" says the employees were fired because the woman and the "clamoring public" demanded they be fired.

This company owner has no spine. Gutless punk.

I agree, unless it is an "employment at will" state. In that case you can fired at any time for any reason. They just don't want you around anymore.

If the business requires two weeks notice from employees who choose to leave it may also be required to pay two weeks on termination without notice.

Like you I am not a lawyer so I could be wrong. The ex-employees should talk to a non-liberal lawyer for advice. If they can find one.

Yeah. But you were the owner. These were employees following protocol. If the owner had actually been there, she could have made that decision. It wasn’t up to the employees. We’re I the fired employee, she’d be hearing from my attorney right now. As she basically called her employees racist and stupid and fired them for following the rules and not some unwritten, arbitrary gobbledygook.

As an aside, how’s it going? You getting the smoke from the Buzzard fire yet? I see they closed the Santa Fe NF to all recreational activity already.

That’s great if you’re the only one working there. When it’s employees and not owners, the rules are different. This same business could be fined for forcing overtime on their employees. And Lord help the employee who has just finished cleaning up when a customer decides to ignore the “closed” sign!

I feel really bad for the employees.

You followed the rules. You did nothing wrong. But you are out the door ‘cause the squeaky black woman gets the grease.

One has to be prepared to prostrate their self at any time for a black person. Muslims are great at provoking this reaction, too.

I know of three recent incidents where black people are publicly throwing fits at establishments to get their own way. One my son and I witnessed. The other two my son witnessed.
