Michael English, 72, was one of 258 men who took part in the trial.
He was first diagnosed in 2005, but radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone-based therapies did not kill his cancer.
Two years ago, he was given the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab.
He said: "We were astonished when scans showed that the tumour had become undetectable.
"Today I'm effectively cancer-free."
He says he's now planning out the next 20 years of his life, not the next two.
Researcher Prof Johann de Bono told the BBC: "This is the first evidence that a subset of prostate cancer patients do spectacularly well on immunotherapy.
"We have several patients in the Marsden who have had a complete response.
"It is a new arrow in the quiver for men with lethal prostate cancer, it's a big deal for these patients."

Dispense it in form of pills? I thought Keytruda is administered by intra-venous infusion.
drug’s brand name is Keytruda and it’s been on the US market for a few years. I know, because I dispense it 5 days a week. It’s expensive, widely available and used for other cancers as well.””
Good point, my cousin has primary lung cancer with metastasis to the liver. He has responded favorably to the Keytruda following several rounds of other therapy.
More guys die from prostrate cancer than women of breast cancer;
...
Don’t more women die from heart disease than breast cancer?
Those “just X-rays” for the mammogram require a lot of squishing between hard plates, which borders on painful. Men who suspect they have breast cancer—about 1% of breast cancer patients—also undergo the mammogram.
And don’t forget, women have to go through the PAP test, which is exceedingly uncomfortable and embarrassing. It used to be annual, but (thank goodness) the guidelines have changed and it is now every 5 years for low-risk women.
Thank you for the information. All I can say is Whew!
Thank you God for making me a man! And I helped deliver our 2 children, and thank you God again!!
It seems that the media hypes this as though it's the only cancer out there. I personally am sick of hearing about it.
I have always maintained that if men had to undergo “scrotograms” (like unto women’s mammograms, only for scrotums), a cure for prostate cancer would have been discovered a long long time ago.
How would you like to have your penis flattened between two plates? Really flattened.
A truly spectacular and miraculous drug would reverse the effects of a stroke, physically as well as mentally. God be blessed when that day arrives.
If this drug works as advertized, it will soon be shelved by Big Pharma, and never heard of again.
The medical industrial complex will not let you kill their multi trillion dollar golden goose.
Yourr comparing apples and penises. Not the same kind of tissue.
Heck, breast cancer isn’t even the the number one cancer killer of women:
The number one cause of death for women in the U.S. is heart disease, followed by all cancers, among which breast cancer ranks as the second-most deadly. About 40,450 women are expected to die from breast cancer in the U.S this year, according to breastcancer.orgthat’s around 1 in 30. As many as 1 in 3 women die each year from cardiovascular disease or strokemore than from all cancers combined.

Also men are more likely to die for every age of life, and of course women have longer life expectancies. It’s all politics. People should be sick of it.
Until a certain National Auto sales company alSo advertises in BLUE instead of PINK alone, I will not shop there!
Could it be men hate the Urologist poking finger up their anus for prostate exam? Women’s breast exam is just X-rays.
Ah, thats the old way to do it. My doctor says hes going to give me a DIGITAL prostate examination...
