President Donald Trump praised North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un -- a man who leads a government that outside observers say brutalizes and starves its own citizens -- as someone who "loves his people."
Speaking with Voice of America's Greta Van Susteren following his historic summit in Singapore on Tuesday, Trump called Kim "funny" and "smart."
"He's got a great personality. He's a funny guy, he's very smart, he's a great negotiator. He loves his people, not that I'm surprised by that," Trump said. "I think that we have the start of an amazing deal. We're going to denuke North Korea."
North Korea has perpetuated human rights abuses for decades, according to watchdog agencies, human rights groups and the US government. A 2014 report from a United Nations Human Rights Council commission found the country had committed violations including "arbitrary detention, torture, executions and enforced disappearance to political prison camps, violations of the freedoms of thought, expression and religion, (and) discrimination on the basis of State-assigned social class, gender, and disability."
Trump relayed that Kim reacted to discussing human rights "very well" but said they "were talking about the denuclearization 90% of the time."
"I understand the past and, you know, nobody has to tell me, he's a rough guy. He has to be a rough guy or he has been a rough person," Trump said. "He's smart, loves his people, he loves his country. He wants a lot of good things and that's why he's doing this."
"But he's starved them. He's been brutal to them. He still loves his people?" Van Susteren asked.

I am greatly disappointed as well, and think the press might be right, and this deal and talks are going to go nowhere.
The good thing is this is Trumps only second misstep since taking office.
So how do you stop that crap? You can continue staring at each other through rifle sights over the DMZ as the morons have since about 1954. You can feel better about yourself by insisting he surrender for trial and hanging...and you will have another 6 decades of hostility.
Or, you can say a few nice things, which everyone knows are BS, and set him up to be the hero for bringing peace and a modern standard of living to North Korea. The “fatal hug” of trade will erode the police state by about 90%.
Trump is doing something great here. God only knows how many millions of people have died over the west’s insistence that dictators be arrested and hanged. There is zero incentive for them to go somewhere with some loot and be left alone. Instead they harden and cause hundreds of thousands to die because they have no alternative. Trump is smart enough to change the model.
Freaking genius and is probably smarter than every president we have had in decades.

Many Conservatoves did not have Donald Trump as their first choice. That did not stop most of us from voting for Trump over Billary, Inc. The same was true with Romney vs Obama.
As a Conservative the one thing I am not is an automatic knee jerk cheerleader, if I disagree with someone.

Exactly correct. All our idiot presidents from 1988 forward have been dim bulbs that simply do not have the skill or vision to give these bad guys an escape route and prefer to leave them the choice of surrender to be hanged, or to harden their resistance, and dig in their heels. Trump is the first one to throw a guy a lifeline in exchange for simply dialing way back on the A-hole behaviors.
And even more, he showed him a positive vision of the future.

I have supported Trump’s forway with Kim. Supported that does not mean my mind is numb and I am just supposed to cheer every element of the conduct of it, even when I disagre with element.

You don’t know what you are talking about. I am in agreement with Trump on his opening a dialogue directly with Kim. That basic thing, and having Bolton on board is a good thing.
That said, my mind is not numb, I can think for myself, and I do not have to agree with everything Trump says and does in that effort. I am a thinker, not a mind numbed cheerleader who must just agree to be agreeable, even when I disagree.
You are correct. The Left for years has waxed poetic about Stalin, Mao, Fidel, the Viet Cong, Che, and every murderous tin pot power mad leader of their favorite ideology. And Conservatives have rightly called them on it. We owe the same duty and respect to truth when one of ours lets lies like this leave their mouths. Even if it the President. Even more so since we have no misguided illusions about Communism and Socialism.
I don’t understand the attitude that every word from President Trump has to be applauded. That he must be immune from any criticism. If such is leveled at him you are a rabid anti-Trumper who wants him to fail. That is not how thinking Conservative work. We are not blind sycophants who put any man before true. That is what the Left excels at. Furthermore it shames of us who are Christian to ignore wrong for the sake of political expediency.
Trump did not have to flatter Kim to the press. He did not have to point out the obvious failings of Kim’s policies. He could have been silent. That would have been the right course.
