Politicians fear for safety as threats against Congress skyrocket

“The true reality is if somebody wanted to do me harm, they could probably do that with relative ease and that is sad,” said Rep. Chuck Fleishmann (R-Tenn.), a New York City native.

And members of Congress aren’t allowed to carry around their licensed concealed guns while in Washington, taking away one option to defend themselves.

“I’m trained at what I do and how I do it with a weapon,” said Rep. Mike Bishop (R-Mich.), who backs concealed carry reciprocity legislation. “If I had the ability to carry, I would feel safer.”

On the morning of June 14, 2017, liberal activist James Hodgkinson opened fired at the Alexandria, Virginia, practice field.

“And members of Congress aren’t allowed to carry around their licensed concealed guns while in Washington,”

Congress could change that if they wished.

Oh, every damn TV show in the ‘70s. A .38 revolver, registered to...

Don’t expect a rational response from Congress.

They are more likely to proceed with “Red Flag” legislation, which will be abused as the new “SWATing”.

They aren’t afraid of normal functioning people voting them out of office (which is a useful fear), they are afraid of being shot by lunatics. It is clear that the Democrats are already terrified of the most insane portions of the base, and are acting on their demands. That is not a useful sort of fear, it is destructive and corrosive.

And blown out of proportion. In the last 70 years only one Senator and two Congressmen have been shot while in office, and the Senator's injuries were due to a mugging gone wrong. They're creating a crisis where none exists, and if they're that afraid then don't run for office. Problem solved.

No surprise. If one does not do his or her job well then he or she is let go. But for those in government they can make mistake after mistake and probably get a raise. Sad, but true.

That’s what I meant. Sorry

I live in Maryland where it’s very difficult to obtain a carry permit.

They should be required to carry while Congress is in session as a reminder of 2A.

I mean EVERY TV show from the ‘70s. And ‘80s. Even the ones I liked. If a gun was involved, it was ‘registered to’ someone.

And, how many people have they tricked into believing that all firearms are and must be registered? I have been asked it in the real world. Subliminal indoctrination.

Yet they refuse to build security for the citizens of this country by building a border wall. So I guess I have little sympathy for them.

Having spoken to many people who came from countries where political differences are settled with violence, I had absolutely no desire to go there.

But go there it appears we shall.

Gabby Giffords and Steve Scalise were both in recent memory which adds legitimacy to their concerns. Also Wiki says there were five shot by Puerto Rican activists in 1954, which I had never heard of before. I do know that a Pennsylvania Republican retired in the 90’s due to him and his staff being menaced by a former Baltimore City teacher who was the same machete-wielding lunatic who ended up attacking an elementary school.

Hmmm... looks to me like the larger problem is dealing with the crazies that we all have to dodge and walk on eggshells to avoid offending.
