Russias mission to the UN accused the U.S. of attempting to turn the council into a tool to promote only their interests, and said it would continue to work with the 47-member body.
It was in that spirit that Russia nominated its candidacy for the 2021-2023 HRC membership elections, the mission said in a statement.
Russia has put forward its candidacy for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) after the United States withdrew from participation in the Geneva-based body halfway through its three-year term.
Russia lost its reelection to a seat on the council in 2016, after rights groups successfully lobbied against its candidacy because of Russian military support for the Syrian government.

was it really about Syria that they lost their seat , or was it more about Russia, and their stance o homosexuality.
I ask because since Russia stopped these people promoting homosexuality the UN, FIFA, and others went after Russia, with sanctions, not letting athletes, and players play, losing seats etc.
At the same time that is when obama lost his love interest in Russia and went on the offensive against them .
Now there is a perfect fit./s
LOL...Russia is about like Somalia in human rights. Give them a seat!
Knock yourself out, Vlad.
Could not have coordinated that any better.
The irony of Russia heading up that thing.
Just withdraw everything from the UN and they can have the whole thing.
Russia seeking a seat on the UN’s Human Rights Commission is akin to David Duke seeking a seat on the Anti-Defamation League’s board of directors.
“Just withdraw everything from the UN and they can have the whole thing.”
Looks as though that’s what Trump is doing, one piece at a time. And with each ‘withdrawal,” there is also the “withdrawal” of American dollars. The way to put the UN out of business is for America to stop funding it at least as the levels we have been. Somewhere, I read that our general funding contribution is something on the order of 22%, and that does not include “peacekeeping” and “special assessments,” of which the HRC is probably a component. The UN “tree” will wither if we don’t “nourish it” with our dollars. One of the happiest days of my life would be to see their HQ removed from our soil.
Withdraw from the UN, period. Send them packing to Brussels, Paris or Beijing.
LOL! They’ll fit right in.
Could only improve the HRC.
Let the UN tree die!!
