Elizabeth Warren's claim on number of medical bankruptcies greatly overstated, study shows

Health-care-related bankruptcies, touted as a key justification for passing Obamacare in 2010, are not nearly as prevalent as reform proponents such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren have claimed, researchers say.

Findings of an exhaustive report published in the American Economic Review this year have sparked a lively debate as the Trump administration rolls back key portions of the health care law.

Matthew Notowidigdo, an associate professor of economics at Northwestern University, and fellow researchers looked at the rate of first-time health emergencies and resulting debt levels for patients. The result: About 4 percent of insured patients and 6 percent of uninsured patients ended up filing for bankruptcy.

That was a far cry from the claim advanced in a 2009 study by Ms. Warren and internal physician Dr. David Himmelstein that over 60 percent of bankruptcies in the U.S. were caused by extreme medical debt. Ms. Warren at the time was one of the country’s best-known bankruptcy law specialists.

“In terms of social science, it shows the difference between a naive reading of survey data and an actual research design,” Mr. Taylor wrote on his blog discussing the debate last month. “In terms of politics, it shows the allure of a more glamorous and striking claim, even when incorrect, over a similar claim that is less flashy but actually true.”

Of course it is greatly overstated and then reported on as true, outside the borders of our country. My British relatives use this sort of claim as fact and then there is a long discussion on Facebook as to how lucky they are to have their NHS. The Left claims ridiculous statistics on EVERYTHING and they are never held to account.

This is the same kind of crap which is put out on social media as if it were fact, but to liberals real facts are not in the equation so long as they get the headlines and convince their social media pals it is true.

Elizabeth Warren does have a tendency to, shall we say, exaggerate and embellish more than customary, even for a person who lives and dies in worship of “The State” as a palpable deity.

Command and control governance seems at first to be so “efficient”. but there are some things that quickly creep in, like the normally truculent side of human nature, and the difficulty of getting everybody on the same page simultaneously.

#RustyIrony and some cold hard analysis! After watching Stephen Colbert’s late night show... but the late night (anti)”comedians” are all the same. Cookie cutter.

Trump understood what Hillary (and most Democrats don’t)... that these days a political campaign is show biz. Trump’s rallies are essentially stand up comedy routines... that are far funnier and more entertaining than the late night comedians. He treats his opponents as they treat him... with derision, satire and ridicule. Such as he does with Sen. Warren (when late night Colbert does it to Trump... it’s “humor” when Trump does it to “Fauxahontus”... it’s “racism”), the double standard is easy to spot.

So far he can take the hits, but his opponents cannot (or so it seems). Their obsession with him is pathological IMHO... folks like Colbert remind me of trained dogs... they may hate their master, but when Trump throws the stick, they obediently go a’running! Constant outrage wears thin very quickly... each day the roar from the Left becomes more and more white noise... tuned out by the Trump supporters, tired of being told they’re “stupid”. The revolt of the “Deplorables” is here... and there’s lots of them in “flyover” country. Justathought.

The greatest part about this is that it's a direct, factual, scientific, and potentially crushing attack on the very foundation of Warren's gravitas as a lawyer / social scientist / public policy expert. Her very raison d'être was the "groundbreaking" work she supposedly did to establish the link between bankruptcies and medical costs. At a minimum, this study proves the link is not nearly as strong - by a considerable factor - as Warren, in her typical histrionics, claimed it to be.

Dust.

How come we never hear about the bankruptcies caused by tax obligations?

GREAT point. If you're a garden-variety wage earner, you don't even get a chance to spend XX% of money you earn because it never gets into your wallet due to withholdings.

The entire article has non-comparable facts.

You cannot make arguments, pro or con, on data points that are not about the same thing.

The “new” analysis seeks to point out: “About 4 percent of insured patients and 6 percent of uninsured patients ended up filing for bankruptcy.”

The report then simplisticly seeks to compare the “4 percent” and “6 percent” to “a 2009 study by Ms. Warren and internal physician Dr. David Himmelstein that over 60 percent of bankruptcies in the U.S. were caused by extreme medical debt.”

Yes a percentage that is either 4% or the 6$ are obviously smaller than 60%, but the 4% and 6% are not even talking about the same thing. They are talking about “patients” and the 60% is talking about ALL bankruptcies.

To know any relationship to the two, one has to know the size of “insured” and “uninsured patients” and the size of all “bankruptcies”.

In 2009 there were about 254 million people with some health insurance coverage and about 51 million who did not.

As any survey would try to do is it would want to extrapolate the survey result from the samples they had in the survey to the same demographic groups. Well 4% of “the insured” would be about 11 million, and 6% of “uninsured” would be about 3 million, or altogether about 14 million.

For 2009 there was only about 1.41 million personal bankcuptcies altogether. Obviously there is no way to square the differences between the two “studies”.

To square anything, the total number of bankrupcies being examined in both studies has to be identified. No comparison between the two studies is valid without it. Without it one can only assume the two studies use different data, or differenly include &/or exclude data from the same base, for different reasons; making everything an aplles vs orages case.
