N.H. Supreme Court upholds constitutionality of voter residency bill

A fiercely contested bill to make residency a condition of voting in New Hampshire was determined by the state Supreme Court to be constitutional Thursday, in a major ruling that clears its approval by Gov. Chris Sununu.

In a 3-2 ruling, the court found that the bill, House Bill 1264, is not a burden on the right to vote, but rather a means to better organize state laws “in order to place voters and residents on equal footing as New Hampshire citizens.”

The court’s decision, which came without warning, now sets up a high-stakes choice for Sununu. On Thursday afternoon, hours after the court weighed in, the bill passed from Senate President Chuck Morse’s desk over to the governor’s office. That set in motion a constitutionally mandated five-day countdown; Sununu must decide by Tuesday whether to veto, sign or let pass without signature a law he has taken varying positions on in the last seven months.

In a terse statement Thursday, Sununu declined to show his cards.

“In a 3-2 ruling”....scary that 2 judges would think it was ok to vote in a state you might not live it.....it is because of judge like this we are so screwed up as a country

This is the single most relevant incident that started the decline of California. Back in the 90’s, Pete Wilson (R) was Governor. Other than Arnold Schwartzenegger, who was R-light and controlled (at the time) by his BIG D wife, Maria Shriver, there hasn’t been a Republican elected to statewide office since Motor-Voter was enacted. It just allows illegals to register to vote. And remember what Obama said in the run-up to the November 2016 election? ‘IF YOU LIVE HERE, THAT MEANS YOU CAN VOTE’!! He actually encouraged illegals to vote!! And who doesn’t think that illegals voting gave Hillary her edge in the popular vote? Motor-Voter must end, but the spineless Republicans in the House will never go for it......too controversial.

I always thought donations to representatives of a state should be restricted to residents as well.

Lots of out of state money comes into “hot” elections, and the result is not a representative of state, but of other states.

an interesting project could be to compare voter rolls in college towns and their home states.

Start with the ivy league, harvard, yale, etc.

The “blue wave” is going to be the standing wave created by a particularly giant log blocking the blue toilet water from circling down the drain in an orderly fashion...

In other words, the Dems shouldn't criticize the neighbor's toilet before they take the log out of their own, right?

I've heard such logs are often contaminated with 0moebas.

It should have been done long ago, that would help quite a lot, to stop voter fraud and clean up the voting rolls.

Hillary stole this state in college towns like Keene. A few thousand votes can swing this state easily. This is a sane law ...

Amen ...

We always see liberals moving out of their socialist states to ruin a red state. Well imagine if every conservative for those liberal states moved to swing states like VA, NC, FL, CO, AZ, NM. Millions of us moving to make those states red would be so great.

oops we escaped mexifornia to tennessee. NC and VA were on the shortlist but we didn’t want to move to a state that would be turning blue. Which seems to be the trend. I think for the most part conservatives are moving to conservative states. It probably doesn’t help the electoral vote much. But it does make me happy where I chose to live :-)

Trump would have unquestionably won NH if nonresident students were not allowed to vote.

I did not vote for Kelly Ayotte and I’m glad she lost. Actions have consequences.
