That said — there are degrees of being a foe and different situations for each country. But one word - foe. Foe is synonymous with enemy. Why are we protecting our enemies?

Trump is not saying the EU is a military enemy. His statement was in the context of trade. As usual the media gets wrapped across the axle in taking words out of context.
