Trump’s trade war makes political sense to his base. Rivals must beware

When Donald Trump’s chief trade adviser went to Beijing in May with proposals to open up China’s vast domestic market to American goods – and thereby reduce a ballooning trade deficit with China – the mission was declared a failure.

Before Robert Lighthizer set off, the veteran rightwing economist told Congress: “It is not my objective to change the Chinese system. It seems to work for them … But I have to be in a position where the US can deal with it, where the US isn’t the victim of it. And that’s where our role is.”

Chinese officials wanted to appear flexible. They said China needed to protect domestic businesses from being crushed by foreign rivals, but agreed to loosen China’s rules on foreign ownership.

Lighthizer, who was accompanied by Trump’s top team, including treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, commerce secretary Wilbur Ross, White House trade and manufacturing adviser Peter Navarro, and new White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, deemed the offer insufficient.

Two months later and the world is gripped by fears of an all-out trade war, with higher tariffs already levied, or about to be, on almost $1 trillion of goods traded between the US and China, the US and Europe, and the US and its partners inside the Nafta trade area, Canada and Mexico. It shows how tough Lighthizer believes the US needs to be to force Beijing into action. It shows how his boss is prepared to back him, even when corporate America is telling him the opposite.

Chinese academics fear that Communist party officials have underestimated Trump and allowed a small problem to escalate out of control...

Pretty good article.

Actually.

There is a lot there. I quoted quite a bit, but there is quite a bit more at the site.

All I know is we need to do something.

Trump is who we (wisely) elected, to do that something.

What exactly it will be, will be quite interesting.

In my view.

Media still pushes the big lie of “Trump’s trade war” when he did not start it.

Yes, but.

To tell the truth, he seems to be the very first American leader, who has stood up on the issue.

All of our former presidents, have been sold out.

Every one of them. Both parties. Everyone. Every single person, since H. Ross Perot, so many years ago, correctly said this would happen.

Now, Trump has not done anything yet. The trade deficit between China and America is currently at an ALL TIME HIGH. The worst ever.

And it is bigger, every single month, this year, than even it was last year.

Trump will set yet another record. Big time.

But he seems prepared to do the right thing.

Seems.

We will see.

I bet palms were greased on both sides of these deals when they were made. Wish we could track down the crooks that made them.

Evidence? Look at how much money these politicians start with and how much they end up with when they retire.

I think you are completely right.

Absolutely.

I don’t have any proof of that however. Just a feeling.

EVERYONE has seemed to be selling us out. Every single politician.

You nailed it. It is weird, how everyone seems to speak with one voice, everywhere about the trade situation.

Like it’s normal to be so completely sold out.

Nothing could be stranger, in fact.

There is a reason why the two major “parties” have been called the Uniparty of late. It was going on before and after WWII as well.

They said China needed to protect domestic businesses from being crushed by foreign rivals

But according to the Liberals, the US is not allowed to do the same.

Without the US market, who is China going to sell their crap to? The Chinese people don't want to buy it...they know it's crap.

President Trump is about to restore balance of trade to reflect reciprocity as a major principle.

No nation need accept the eventual destruction of its economy and its security as a genuine trade policy. Why should we?

Things will come into balance in due course. Meanwhile the US economy is booming. Watch as China begins to resort to violence, riots and protests at the locations of US Corporate Headquarters in China.Inside China there is a war going on between the doves and the hawks. If the hawks win, then the Chinese People will once again slip into starvation and misery. I do not think the general populous of China will quietly accept a devolution of their standard of living. Indeed IMHO , PDJT is betting on that.

Generally good, but I did notice that they say China’s a victim of forces outside its control then right after they say China’s manipulating its currency.

Trump took bold and positive action and we are winning - despite some of the others here who prefer whining to winning....

I agree with your view - we have to see how it all shakes out in the end but it will definitely be interesting - they will be writing books/essays. etc., about President Trump for decades to come - similar to Sun-Tzu's "Art of War" - "Art of the Deal" will be right up there....

I wonder how much payola our perpetually outraged political rulers are sucking up from China and drug cartels.
