'Mutiny' at UNRWA
Arutz Sheva ^ | 8/8/18

Workers have seized partial control of the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian Arab refugees and their descendants in Hamas-run Gaza, its head said Wednesday, accusing their union of "mutiny" over job cuts.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) announced last month more than 250 staff in Gaza and Judea and Samaria would lose their jobs, after a $300 million cut in annual funding from the United States.

The redundancies have prompted daily protests by the agency's labour union in the enclave, which UNRWA's Gaza head said have led to security concerns.

"They have taken over the compound where my office and other offices are," said Matthias Schmale.

The agency's Gaza chief admitted UNRWA does not have full control over the site, in Gaza City, explaining he has not been able to access his own office for more than two weeks.

"I am the captain of the ship which has 13,000 sailors on it and they have basically thrown me off the bridge and consigned me to my captain's quarters," he told AFP, referring to the number of employees in Gaza.

Schmale accused the labor union of multiple incidents of "threatening and intimidating other fellow Palestinian staff. For me that crosses a red line."

"I am very concerned about the safety and security of my Palestinian colleagues," he added.

The union denied all allegations of intimidation and is due to continue demonstrating, with a general strike expected in the coming days unless a deal is reached.

Excellent. We cut $300M in funding and the UN decided that the hotbed in the ME is where they should apply the cuts? Brilliant!!!!

Me thinks this is a huge UN PR stunt blowing up in their faces. I bet the hoped that violence and bloodshed would break out. That would show the Americans! Instead, their own employees are revolting.

Pass the popcorn.

First, the would be "confined to quarters", you rube.
Second, you have 13,000 people working in Gaza???? Good Lord, man. A highly functional robot and 2 logisticians could do what you are doing much more economically.

I am a tad confused. The money that paid the Palestinian employees is no longer there. They are protesting to make the US continue paying the money by occupying a site on their own territory...Is there some lever here I am not seeing?

Pretty sure the crew from the original “Lost in Space” could do better. “highly functional” isn’t necessary.

Unless the goal is to “cause trouble”. In that case you may need 13,000 “community organizers”.

Attention in the news. The peace plan being devised by Kushner and Greenblatt reportedly contains a clause eliminating UNRWA.

No other refugees remain refugees for generation after generation. If plan is agreed to, although it almost definitely won’t be, “Palestinians” would be like any other people: refugees for one generation only.

A $300 million cut from the U.S. and they’re only losing 250 jobs?

Well that's only $1.2 million per job. The UN has a lot of overhead expenses to pay, don't you know. :^)
