Analyzing the Trump effect: Is America having a nervous breakdown?
SF Chronicle ^ | Aug 9, 2018 | Joe Garofoli

Think people are losing their minds over President Trump? Maybe it’s not all in your head.

The American Psychological Association is holding its annual convention in San Francisco, and there are no fewer than 15 symposiums, panel discussions and paper presentations devoted to the psychological ills that practitioners believe are spreading under the president.

The list of Trump-related topics at the four-day conference covers the psychic waterfront. “Metaphors and the Trump Administration: What Are Effective Responses?” “Healing Practices and Models for Undocumented Students in the Trump Era.” “Gaining Perspective: Intergroup Conflict Intervention With Trump Supporters and Opponents.”

And, “#MAGA: What Pro-Trump Hashtags Tell Us About the 2016 Election.”

Speakers at the conference, which has drawn 11,000 psychologists from around the country, say the glut of Trump-gazing is understandable: The political world is freaking a lot of people out.

In the psychological association’s 2017 Stress of America survey, 57 percent of respondents said “the current political climate” was a top source of angst in their lives. More people were stressed out by politics than their family responsibilities (49 percent) or their health situation (also 49 percent.)

Political-related stress has never scored that high in the dozen years the organization has been putting America on the survey couch. Now, people who live in the world of the 50-minute hour are seeing poli-stress every day.

“We’re seeing it in our clients, we’re seeing it our colleagues — people are on edge,” said Fred Bemak, a George Mason University professor who will be leading a symposium Friday on “The Impact of Global Politics and the Trump Era on Psychology.”

Thank you, FRiends. Candidly, though I am numb to the hysteria of the past 19 mos. I was a little stunned when I was editing for my post. To be fair, I think we'd all be pretty glum had Hillary won (SamAdams76 wins the prize for best description of the day after: "The morning of November 9, I felt like I had a fatal disease that suddenly went into remission.") but we wouldn't be acting like the current losers, a-la Johnny Fontane:

That has been pretty much replaced by the newer A-Typical Antipsychotics due to side effects such as tardive dyskinesia.

The transition from those old phenothiazines to the new was a tough one for patients but tardive dyskinesia is irreversible. Abilify was the drug of choice before retiring.

Now, THIS, I am looking forward to.

Me thinks, though you are mentally prepared, will be very, very shocked.

And watch out for needles. Not kidding. My daughter's colleague works out of there and he saw a needle on the BART train.

“The cure: turning off the MSM and staying off social media.”

Yes. I wish more people would realize this, including consevatives.

True, we are not suffering in the age of Trump. In fact, it is great sport to watch the Left melt down, and make fun of them.

But I think they feed on the attention we pay them, even though we are mocking them. Why? Because they don’t realize the joke is on them - they bask in the attention and feel important and relevant.

Even the negative attention we pay them breathes new life into their sense of self importance.

We should yawn and turn away.

I wish Hannity would stop showing montages of the worst of CNN, MSNBC talking heads, etc.. Its bad enough that someone as brainless and dishonest as Rachel Madow can attract her small following on CNN, but why quadruple her audience by replaying her rants on Hannity?

I guess people just get fascinated - like rubberneckers slowing down to look at a multi car pile up on the turnpike.

I am finding the hysteria amusing. And actually somewhat comforting. Because in the event of economic collapse or a revolution or social unrest, after seeing how these people fall apart for the smallest of reasons I know without a doubt our side will win.

How do you fight a war or handle economic deprivations if you have to go run to your safe space because a politician tweeted something you didn’t like.

These people won’t last long. They are only being propped up by a socialist government. With each generation they get weaker and weaker, incapable of thinking for themselves or of understanding logic or of taking care of themselves. They are pitiful

In theory, I agree that lack of fortitudinous folk on constant display fortifies my belief that we are increasing while they are crumbling.

In practice, this also means this pathetic lot is all the more susceptible to manipulation by some hard-line dictator-in-waiting who promises that Deplorables will be dealt with "appropriately" if elected. Furthermore, just like the waves of Chinese who poured over the NK border when the allied forces were knocking during the Korean War, if these people feel like they have nothing for which to live I can see them becoming weaponized.

Yes, I know...they can barely handle daylight. And yea...we have more ordnance. But history hath shewn that people are capable of incredible things - both good and bad - when backed into a corner. This isn't something to fret about...but it's worth monitoring.

This is why movements like #Walkaway are so attacked by the statists - on the left and #NeverTrump/Deep State crowd - because they have the potential to give hope to these crumbling snowflakes, and convert some of them into centrists...then right-leaning thinkers, then Deplorables. Imagine heretofore Liberals of all sizes and shapes suddenly coming into the Light...now THAT would be more heartening to me than what's on display today.

Pie-in-the-Sky? Maybe. But then this was considered a done deal 2 years ago...

The liberals thought they had finally defeated the American people but the American people have rallied. And the liberals are gnashing their teeth in frustration.

Partner, I could not have said this any better!!!

I love it that we finally got ourselves a really great POTUS. The right arm of the Rat party is the Fake News MSM and the Rat party is the party of the Communists/Socialists/Anarchists folks that they turned out to be.

Like a hamster on a wheel, President Trump is in their heads 24/7, and soon he will pull their plug?

The left are scared stitch-less as they watch in horror, their bizarre, utopian, totalitarian state of mind literally slipping through their fingers.

Turn off CNN. Stay off Twitter. Go out and get a life.

The classic relief for this type of mental strife and political discord/division has come in the form of civil war. For some reason we can’t get to that point.

Not America. The DNC and the left are throwing a tantrum.

For the first time in years they have a parent that is telling them no more sweeties. So they are screaming and breaking things to get their way.
