It was very much an early 1930s phenomenon. There was a lot less of it from 1933 onwards.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

“HE’S NOT WORTH YOUR TEARS”

This version has the complete intro, and it’s a heartfelt take on the song. Your screen may get blurry when she resolves the minor key middle eight into the major.

I did a few gigs in Russian Tea Rooms back in the 60’s, and nearly all the Russian and Gypsy songs do that. It is characteristic of that music.

This was one of my faves:

It’s also typical of Jewish music.

Dmitri's death at such a young age was a terrible blow to the world of lieder. There was no one who could sing the songs of Rachmaninov like he could. I like the way he caressed the C at the end of the song.

Yes...I really loved his voice and his interpretations as well.

And, as a female, I found him easy on the eyes as well.

He made turning gray look great. And he kept his hair to the end.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

“I REMEMBER YOU FROM SOMEWHERE”

Harry teamed with Edgar Leslie for this little tune from 1930. That’s Ruth Etting on vocal duties. Once again we dip into the minor key for the middle eight.

I miss him.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HARRY WARREN

“TELLING IT TO THE DAISIES”

Gene Austin is important in musical history for being the first crooner, thanks to electric recording. He sings the entire intro here. If you listen carefully, the tuba is no longer backing the bass line. Joe Young is the lyricist.
