Boston police captain's son gets 20 years for terror plot

A Boston police captain's son, who authorities called a "committed soldier" of the Islamic State group, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Wednesday for plotting to use assault rifles and homemade bombs to kill Americans on a college campus.

Alexander Ciccolo, who went by the name Ali Al Amriki, pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in May, three years after his father alerted the FBI about his son's desire to fight for the terror group.

Ciccolo's lawyers say the man, who dealt with mental health and substance abuse issues, had poorly thought out plans and no real ability to carry out the attack. Authorities, meanwhile, described him as a loyal Islamic-State group supporter devoted to inflicting "maximum damage" upon the United States.

"Make no mistake, Alexander Ciccolo was a committed soldier of ISIS who wanted to kill innocent people at a United States university with assault rifles and pressure cooker bombs, not an unwitting dupe who didn't understand the gravity of what he was doing," Hank Shaw, special agent in charge of the Boston FBI office, said in a statement.

Why is the father still on the force. It doesn't take much of an imagination to see the potential danger a cop in a big city having a moslem terrorist son.

Another common denominator - mental heath, drugs, meds, and monitoring by authorities. Yikes!

Ciccolo's lawyers say the man, who dealt with mental health and substance abuse issues, had poorly thought out plans and no real ability to carry out the attack.

Alexander Ciccolo, who went by the name Ali Al Amriki, pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in May...

Now he can go by the name Ali Al Supermaxi.

20 years for a poorly thought out plan (with guns and bombs) and no real ability to carryout the plan.

It would be interesting to see what exactly the plan consisted of. Doesn’t it seem odd he received 20 years if he has no guns or bombs?

For example, a novelist may develop a well thought out plan for a book.

The father is still on the force because he is a good cop, a good man, and a loyal American who turned in his mentally ill son to protect others.

I suppose he was hoping that the FBI could get his son into mental health custody, or prevent him from getting weapons, or catch anyone who might try to use him in a plot.

The FBI, of course, says, “Mentally ill, you say? What a great target for a sting operation. Career advancement, yes, yes, yes.”

I do believe there is such a thing as mentally ill AND evil, or mentally ill and too dangerous to be out, which this young man is - stabbing a nurse ten times in custody.

His father was in a hard place and chose the safety of the public - and he saved his son from becoming a murderer.

Nope,sorry...no sale.He's a potential threat.And I hope you noticed that I said "potential".

I see you're from Jersey. If you're from North Jersey you probably think of yourself as a New Yorker. If that's the case then 9/11 probably would have hit you harder than most Americans.

I,OTOH,am from Eastern Massachusetts.Although I don't live there I spend a lot of time in Boston. And I live about 100 yards from the Boston Marathon route. It's a tradition in our neighborhood each April to walk down and watch the runners go by.

Nope,he's a potential risk.He should be off the force. If he otherwise qualifies for a pension he should get it.Perhaps the pension he gets should be a little bit bigger than if his departure was entirely voluntary.

If I was a Federal prosecutor I'd be looking into his background *very* carefully...just in case.

Sorry, you're not gonna change my mind on this one.

It had to be a hard decision for the father to turn in his son.

I don’t know as I would trust the Boston FBI though.

We don’t have any federal prosecutors since Jeff has been at the helm.
