Trump ups ante on China, threatens duties on nearly all its imports

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Friday he was ready to slap tariffs on virtually all Chinese imports into the United States, threatening duties on another $267 billion of goods on top of $200 billion in imports primed for levies in coming days.

The moves would sharply escalate Trump’s trade war with Beijing over his demands for major changes in economic, trade and technology policy. China has threatened retaliation, which could include action against U.S. companies operating there.

Hours after a public comment period closed on his $200 billion China tariff list, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he was “being strong on China because I have to be.”

“The $200 billion we are talking about could take place very soon depending on what happens with them. To a certain extent it’s going to be up to China,” Trump said. “And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267 billion ready to go on short notice if I want. That totally changes the equation.”

It is not a Trade War if you now have better quality job opportunities.

The Trade War occurred prior, you lost, and caused the new prosperity.

Chinese bought 27 million cars last year and 26 million were built in China. We bought 17 million and four million were made here. There is no free trade. Germany had a 250 billion dollar trade surplus with the world. Wake up America.

So Trump’s tariff tactic didn’t work in July and August.

It’s working perfectly. Xi is under terrific pressure from the real power in China (the military) for his over-reaching threats against their #1 customer, the USA. The question has been whether Trump will win and back off, letting Xi save face, or if he will win by forcing Xi out of office. This move sounds like the latter.

As has been said many times, there is nothing about communism that is conducive to invention and industrial creativity. But they are quite capable of reverse engineering and intellectual property theft.

Their economy is huge but fragile and Trump and his team know exactly where they are weak.

It's about damn time someone had the guts to straighten this situation out for the good of the country (our country) instead of selling out for cash which lines the pockets of leaders (like Hillary).

You confuse tactics with strategy.

China has been like a man straddling 2 canoes in a lake (one foot in the communist canoe and one in that of capitalism).

China has been able to continue this balancing act because we have allowed them to take advantage of us.

Trump will force Xi to make a choice...and there is only one choice he can make.

Not only is Trump seeking the liberation of North Korea...he is seeking the liberation of China (liberation from communism, that is. Trump is does not care about regime change).

I think it can be argued that Xi has already made the choice.

It is likely that he was burdened by the old guard, the hangers on. By taking full control he can shed that burden at a quicker rate, legally.

Meanwhile in North Korea, Kim is attempting to shed the burden also.

Both recognize that it is the youth and the future that really matter

You seem to have a white flag in hand and you are eager to wave it. You must have family from France.

Trump seeking liberation of North Korea?

“China’s trade surplus with US hits record US$31 billion in August”

See? Shouldn’t wave white flag to wishful thinking.

Just like the speaker of China state department claimed:
Trump’s bravado is a sign of lack of confidence.
