Brad Pitt built dozens of homes in New Orleans after Katrina...falling apart and residents suing.

NEW ORLEANS — Kamaria Allen had no plans to return to the Lower 9th Ward after losing everything in Hurricane Katrina. But then she saw the new houses.

Billed as flood-safe and futuristic, the Make It Right homes towered over vacant lots in pops of teal, lemon and lavender. Houses like that just didn’t exist in the working-class, mostly black section of New Orleans that Allen’s family had called home for four generations — and definitely not for $130,000.

Read the article.

Pitt got screwed and ripped off just as these homeowners did.

He tried to do the right thing - and is still trying. But low-life Louisiana crooks and contractors got theirs.

!! For anyone who hasn’t been to NO, it’s akin to being wrapped in moist warm sheets.

Julia Reed’s essay on NO in her book, “Queen of the Turtle Derby,” is amazing. Makes you itch & want a drink.

Maybe. Katrina was 2005. So it’s been 12 years assuming the home was built in 2006.

Don’t assume that. Read the article.

It might help if they painted the wood on the porch, but what do I know.

Sounds like poor maintenance, and poor material choice.

You’re on to something.

In Rat controlled cities, there are ALWAYS crooked and corrupt compliance inspectors who - for a fee - will look the other way at substandard construction.

I’m sure payoffs were made and fat cats got fatter and the poor got screwed.

Remember that corrupt New Orleans pol with cold hard cash stashed in the freezer?

Typical.

They got free homes and are suing because they didn’t do the basic maintenance on them. Looking for a Lottery win.

……………………………………………………………………………..

They were not free, they were $130,000 each.

I’m not going to read the article.

It’s 12 years old or less. My point is the same.

.
They are loaded with wall to roof joints that are highly difficult to lap and flash sufficiently to keep storm water out.

Experienced builders might do it well, but not amateur volunteers looking for recognition.

It’s entirely possible the inspectors were overworked. The scale of construction going on then must have been Yuge.

Latinos Get Little Thanks For Rebuilding New Orleans
December 10, 2011

Since Katrina, the Hispanic population in the New Orleans
metro area has skyrocketed by more than 33,000 people.
That's a 57-percent increase in the past decade,
much higher than the national average.

They came for the construction jobs —

Green building materials are SUPPOSED to decompose back into nature, without chemicals or plastics. They are doing just that. What’s the problem?

Another question: what type of wood did the old Louisiana builders use back around the 1910s?

Down on the Texas coast and as far north as Houston, they built many houses out of cypress wood. Very resilient to humidity and rot, and termites won't touch it. My moms house that was built in the 1940's is built this way. And, she still lives there.

Good link. Eye-opener.

The wood was used in outdoor steps and porches, according to The New Orleans Advocate and was touted to last 40 years.

Off by a few decades!

it was discovered that TimberSIL does not adhere to paint,

So much for trying maintenance by sealing the wood with paint.
