Four years ago a seemingly invincible US senator came within a percentage point of losing his seat in an unexpectedly close election. Mark Warner was pretty moderate as far as Democrats go, a good fit for a state, Virginia, that had drifted out of the Republican column in the last two presidential elections and just elected a full slate of Democratic statewide officials a year before. But midterms are when presidents and their parties get rebuked, and Warner, a telecom millionaire who had once been tipped as presidential contender, took his support for granted. The Republican, lobbyist Ed Gillespie, was supposed to be hopeless, but he nearly claimed what was supposed to be a safe Democratic seat for the GOP.
Texas has been solidly Republican for a lot longer than Virginia has been Democratic, and by a wider margin. But that makes the fact that Ted Cruz has only a single-digit lead over his Democratic opponent, Beto ORourke, all the more remarkable. Polls suggest Senator Cruz is in trouble, and if the overwhelmingly Republican character of the Lone Star State counts against that, the likelihood that 2018 will be as bad for the GOP as 2014 was for the Democrats throws the contest up in the air again...

People on The Right who keep bashing Cruz need to stop until after the election.
Not where I live. I’m stunned at how many Dems have told me they are surprised at how good a job Trump is doing. He’ll win in easily ‘20. The women here love him.
There are a lot of Democrats in my area. I monitored the campaign signs in ‘16. I was stunned to find that out of 586 homes, there was exactly 1 sign for Hillary and 1 for Bernie.
Re-Elect Cruz. Then, somewhere along the line, President Trump can nominate him to replace Ruth Buzzard on the Supreme Court once her embalming fluid gives out and people notice the stench of decay. Then the Texas Governor can appoint a more charismatic Republican to replace Cruz.
That at least is how it would ideally turn out.
Easy win for Cruz, and Trump will seal the deal.
“Buckley was born November 24, 1925, in New York City, the son of Aloise Josephine Antonia (Steiner) and William Frank Buckley Sr., a Texas-born lawyer and oil developer. His mother, from New Orleans, was of Swiss-German, German, and Irish descent....”
Cruz is the ideological leader of the Senate.
He has to stay there.
We have lots of good choices for SCOTUS.
‘Bend the knee’ is a colloquialism ...as anyone who has ever watched Game of Thrones can tell you.
Do you get cable where you live?
The campaign is just beginning. Remember, Harry Reid was supposed to lose in 2010 but he surged in the last few weeks and won.
There you go - lying and hating on Texas again.
Yep - and a lot of folks who remain pissed at Cruz, despite the ways he has been supporting the Trump agenda, will be partially complicit...idiots got their sensibilities chafed and are willing to turn Texas Blue.....”on principle”....
Me too. Even Allen Dershowitz, one of his professors at Harvard said Cruz’ intelligence was off the charts. He nails every point, from political bias to the hyprocrisy of the LEFT during the Kavanaugh hearings. He is the perfect conservative.
Not to mention Justice Antonin Scalia, another staunch conservative and native NYer.
I don't know about you Sam, but I'm having trouble identifying any Texan who's had as much impact on the 'conservative movement' in the last 75 years as William F Buckley or Antonin Scalia.
Perhaps Longhorn can enlighten...
You have to be alive and a politician to contribute to the conservative movement?
Don't tell these guys!
Don't screw the pooch Texas!
Same is true for many other states - take away the b cities and the rest is conservative.
I don’t watch soft porn.
My apologies if I took that wrong.
It damn sure helps!
If you recall them than indicate what they were. I myself do not recall a meaningful departure from supporting Trump.
