Paul Manafort reached a deal to plead guilty to two criminal charges Friday, according to court documents, a move that heads off a second criminal trial for the former Trump campaign chairman.

Mr. Manafort, who becomes the fifth associate of President Trump to plead guilty in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, is expected to admit to conspiracy against the U.S. and conspiracy to obstruct justice. He already was convicted last month by a federal jury in Virginia of not reporting to tax authorities more than $16 million he earned for political consulting work in Ukraine in the early 2010s.

It appears that the deal includes pleading guilty to the charges that he wasn’t convicted on in his previous trial.

So he is Mueller’s fifth successful conviction in the Russia Collusion case. He’s doing a fine job. By the time 2024 rolls around he should be just about ready to wrap it up.

Sounds to me like Mueller’s trying to close this thing down as quickly and quietly as possible.

I think all headlines involving McCabe, Strzok, etc should be phrased “Former Mueller FBI deputy ....”

Time out.... What a carefully worded sentence.

Mr. Manafort, who becomes the fifth associate of President Trump to plead guilty in connection with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, is expected to admit to conspiracy against the U.S. and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

Does any of this link to Mr. Mueller's original mandate?

He’s 70. He will spend the rest of his life in prison on what he’s already been convicted on.

So there’s no point in continuing to waste his assets fighting. It sounds like the jury was just one juror away from convicting him on the rest.

The original mandate gave Mueller a catch-all to go wherever he wants:
(iii)  any other matters within the scope of 28 C.F.R. § 600.4(a).
(c) If the Special Counsel believes it is necessary and appropriate, the Special Counsel is authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters. (d) Sections 600.4 through 600. l 0 of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations are applicable to the Special Counsel.”

Manafort’s attorneys tried to make the case that his prosecution was outside the scope of the Russia investigation. The judge didn’t agree.

Yes, it was a decree to go after any crime.
