Ocasio-Cortez to Trump on Puerto Rico deaths: 'My own grandfather died in the aftermath of the storm. Uncounted'

Washington (CNN) — US House Democratic candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez issued a sobering response to President Donald Trump's false claim that 3,000 people did not die in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Following Trump's Thursday morning tweet, Ocasio-Cortez shared her own family's story -- noting that her grandfather died in the aftermath of the storm.

"My own grandfather died in the aftermath of the storm. Uncounted. Thousands of Puerto Ricans have similar stories. They have lost children, friends, & family members. Instead of finger-pointing, INVEST in the Marshall Plan for Puerto Rico + just transition to renewable energy," Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, ran against -- and defeated -- incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York's 14th Congressional District primary race earlier this year.

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000..." Trump tweeted Thursday morning.

“aftermath” is NOT the same as “after”.......

True statement.

However, the math after the storm, (GWU Model) is faulty/a damned lie and the only purpose is to make President Donald J Trump look bad.

Yep, I agree - I am only pointing out that she politicized her Grandfather’s death under two distinct claims.

It also appears that statistical counting of ‘deaths that would not have occurred if there was not a storm’ is not new. For instance, out of the ~1500-1800 Katrina deaths, at least 20 were from Firearms and an undisclosed amount listed as “many” were indirect deaths after the storm.

Wow, how did you get through all of that trauma? There must be some goverment office “willing to help,” to paraphrase our late, great President Reagan. :)

“My Mom and Dad died in the aftermath of the Northeast Blackout of 1965. Sure, they passed 30 years after the blackout. But the REAL issue is the blackout caused their deaths.”

The blackout was a minor contributing factor. The real reason was they had eaten carrots in their youth.

My father died 6 years ago, in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Nevermind the fact that he never even visited Europe until 1979 - he died in its aftermath.

PUHLEEEEEZE! She never mentioned this, not one single time, until just now. Bull$hit!!!!

That is true for any big disaster anywhere. Sanitation breaks down, clean water can’t be had, food is short, medicine is delayed or not available, people sleeping outside. Nothing new there.

We will need clear definitions to prevent the commies from changing the scorekeeping rules all the time.

You count either IMMEDIATE deaths in a disaster OR EXCESS deaths for a year or more afterward. Both are valid measures. It’s just that the left has suddenly switched to excess deaths rather than immediate deaths.

My dad died in the aftermath of the April 3, 1974 Tornado outbreak which decimated our little town.

He died five years after the tornado, but still...

Natural deaths (reddit)

Puerto Rico has 3.4 Million people living on it. According the 2010 census Puerto Rico has a death rate of 8.6/1000* people per year. According to OP's article 911 have died due to officially "natural causes". So: (38 days / 365 days in a year) * (3,400,000 People * 0.0086 death rate per year) = 3,044 Natural deaths for the same time frame on average.

One of my grandfathers died in July, 1944. In Minnesota. But he'd been to Europe, most recently in the 1860s. My other grandfather in 1942 or 43, his European travels about as recent. But in Chicago. If I'd thought of it, I could have run for office. Though it wouldn't have mattered till the post Obama years of enhanced sensitivity.
