Her own behavior was the large heavy gorilla in the room that everyone ignored, IMHO. Most likely, it was ignored because no one dared to “blame the victim.”
I was a fairly naive teenager, but I wasn’t THAT naive! Any teenage girl attending a party with mostly males and only one other female and willingly partaking in alcohol was advertising herself as “available” and willing for whatever the boys had in mind (and even a naive teenager knew what that was!) She didn’t put herself in that situation anticipating that they’d all be sitting around drinking tea from rose-pattened cups and nibbling at cookies.
I’m not condoning sexual assault, but, as my son says, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.”
She is indeed an embarrassment.
I keep thinking about the Helen Reddy’s song “I Am Woman.” “Hear me roar” has descended and dwindled into “hear me whine and cry, see me fall on the floor and have a tantrum like a two-year-old.”
