“Chink in the armor” is an old one. When I was in graduate school many, many years ago (almost three decades ago, actually), a Hewlett Packard executive was giving a talk and talked about an Asian competitor having a “chink in its armor.” Several class members went crazy at the time and demanded an apology. Back then, he didn’t apologize and it just blew over. Today, it most definitely wouldn’t blow over. Of course, “chink” is as much of a racial putdown as “niggardly” is — just in the minds of the perpetually oppressed.

I worked with an Italian from Connecticut who could have starred in The Godfather, accent & all. But he had absolutely no knowledge of the slur word “guinea” (the subject came up on Columbus Day). We looked in an unabridged dictionary; the word meant either a British gold coin or a species of grouse.

Frank Sinatra believed that when he walked into a room full of non-Italians, they were all thinking “guinea!” when they saw him.

To me, “chink in the armor” means a PLA soldier in a tank.

Detroit Pistons (and others) in the early 60s NBA employed an African American center/forward who had features reminiscent of orientals. You can still look up Ray”Chink” Scott in the NBA archives.
