I read a book a few years back that was very prescient in this regard. It was a barely-okay story, but the plot was exactly what is going on today.

The book was "Terms of Use" by Scott Allan Morrison. He's a lefty, so the bad guy was a rich Republican working with China (hmmm...) to use a huge internet Facebook-type company called "Circles" to do basically what Facebook, Google, Twitter, and all the others are now doing for the left.

The story talked about using virtual fake friend accounts ("bots") to influence a presidential election.

The only way my vote won’t go to Trump is if they flip it in the software when it’s counted. Gotta watch it before you hit ENTER but you have no control over what they do with it after that. Hubby had his local vote flipped once but caught it and rose holy heck over it.
