'People want Roseanne!' ABC execs fear spin-off show The Conners will crash without its fired star

Roseanne ran out of material about 2 years before the original series was cancelled.

They might squeeze a couple of short (10-12 episodes) seasons before the reboot got stale.

Valerie Harper was fired from her TV series (1986-1991) after its first year — salary dispute. The series continued with ‘family’ for 4 more years. Then, however, there were 4 networks, not 200+ cable/satellite channels and Youtube, as competition.

Reboots do not have a good history. Around 2/3 fail after a year or two.

The reason ABC did The Connors was to keep her from opting out of the contract and doing exactly that.
