An employee at a Hackettstown McDonald's was duped Wednesday into taking over $1,000 from the fast food restaurant's safe as part of a scam, police said.
Police were called to the restaurant, located on Route 182, at 7:32 a.m. and discovered that an hour earlier an employee received a call from a man stating he was from McDonald's corporate, according to a release from the Hackettstown Police.
The man told the employee, whose name was not released, to take money from the safe and use it to purchase gift cards so "corporate could deposit the money to help save jobs."
The man then had a taxi pick up the employee and drive him to a store where bought $1,200 in gift cards, police said.
The worker then relayed the gift card information to the scammer and returned to the restaurant, the release stated.

I hope that worker now feels like a fool, because that’s how they appear. This worker, however earnest, should not have access to the money without direct supervison. They way are too gullible.
Didn’t seem strange that this wasn’t being done by the Corporate Office or the Franchisee’s Headquarters?
There may also have been some language or cultural factors.
Either they didn’t understand the request, or figured anyone from their own background could be trusted. Dumb!
I always wanted to put on an expensive suit and then walk into a big box retail store, pretending to be an official from Corporate.
I’d grab some employees and tell them to move all the merchandise from Aisle 5 to Aisle 8, and vice-versa.
Then I’d walk out.
I don’t know if this was an inside job or not, but any mention of “gift cards” guarantees that you are dealing with a scammer. It’s a typical India call-center tactic.
“You owe the IRS money. You can pay with a gift card.”
“You have just won a million dollars. You can pay the handling fee with a gift card.”
“You are due a refund from Microsoft. You can pay the handling fee with a gift card.”
Schmedlap, do you know where the money that was in the safe went to?
I was scammed!
Who scammed you?
I dont know. It was some guy.
Well, lets go down to the jail and you can sit in the cell for awhile and see if anyone in there might be the scammer.
It’s a learning experience. And the $1500 is a better lesson that most people get spending $50,000 on a liberal arts diploma.
Only certain employees even have access to the safe in the first place, right?
So I’m thinking it had to be a manager or supervisor employee, not just hired help who work there, who did this.
That’s who I suspected, as well.
Does he always get hamburgers or does he get cheeseburgers as well?
And here’s another “as well” - LOL
Yeah, that's worth $15/hour.
NOBODY is that stupid.
I’m thinking employee theft.
Hey, it happened to us. Someone forged an email from CEO and one of the administrative assistants whent out and purchased the gift cards. She couldn’t figure out how to send the codes and asked somebody. That was when IT found out.
A former customer was 1 confirmation away from sending a $50K wire transfer due to scammers. They are really good.
I always wanted to put on an expensive suit and then walk into a big box retail store, pretending to be an official from Corporate.
Id grab some employees and tell them to move all the merchandise from Aisle 5 to Aisle 8, and vice-versa.
Then Id walk out.

Just visualizing that cracks me up.
Would make a great video. I say do it.
I had the same thought. Who would even know the code to the safe except a manager or someone like that - who should know better than to follow the instructions from a phone call.
What is it with McDonalds? Several years back, here in Kentucky, a guy called a local McDonalds and convinced the assistant manager on duty that a female cashier was stealing money. He persuaded the manager to call her boyfriend in to help assist with a strip search in the office.
Apparently this guy had other incidents where he duped very gullible people into doing inappropriate things.
As a postscript, this guy was arrested, the boyfriend arrested and the victim was paid out by McDonalds corporate in a big lawsuit
People wearing suits in Vegas is so rare these days that as I walked through the casino the dealers and pit bosses started straightening their ties, standing up straight, smiling, etc.
They must have thought I was from corporate.
Should have gone to the kitchen and started yelling at them that you wanted an equal number of blueberries in every muffin!
Anyone here see the movie “Compliance”? Truly chilling. A true story of a crank caller pretended to be from “corporate” and got managers to perform strip searches and worse on employees (all involving different fast food restaurants, nationwide, and repeatedly). A cautionary tale about not being too compliant (whether manager or employee).
