Before she was gunned down on campus by a bitter ex-boyfriend, the man's manipulations had led Lauren McCluskey to believe that despite his lies, harassing text messages and efforts to extort money from her, she wasn't in danger.

And even after receiving multiple reports about what was going on, University of Utah police determined that while they would investigate the harassment, Melvin Rowland, a convicted sex offender, didn't appear to pose a physical threat to the student who was almost two decades his junior.

That's according to a shocking timeline of moments leading up to McCluskey's murder, presented Thursday by U. police and university officials.

She was in a bar September 1, hooked up with the bouncer. Broke up in the first week in October with him because she found out he was twice her age and was a sex offender who had served time. After breaking up. she lets him spend the night and loans him her car.
Gets lots of fake texts that he killed herself and it’s her fault he is dead.
She gets the car back then he blackmailed her, saying that she had to give him 1000 bucks or he would release their sex photos. (from their 5 week relationship!) She sent the 1000.
Cops knew she was being extorted by a registered sex offender, but say they didn’t know he was on parole. And also that blackmail and extortion didn’t indicate he would be violent.

Nope...Can’t see any way this coulda been prevented.

Women evaluate situations emotionally.

That sometimes leads to unhealthy decisions.

Utah is soft on violent criminals. One dirtbag who had threatened a fast food worker’s life ended up killing two teenagers and throwing their bodies down a mine shaft. He said he made the boy suffer but showed “mercy” to the girl when he killed her. Seems like there’s always a plea bargain and the ACLU loves to support gang members.
