An Overlooked Key to Democratic Victories: Diversity in the Suburbs
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 21, 2018 | Soo Oh

Democrats took control of the House by flipping seats in the nation’s suburbs, which have long been political battlegrounds. But those victories rested on more than just the votes of college-educated white voters, whose shift away from Donald Trump and the Republican Party has drawn wide attention.

People of color were also a large component of the Democrats’ victories in the suburbs—increasingly diverse communities that no longer fit the stereotype of racial homogeneity. They are more likely to live in the suburbs than in urban areas, and no matter where they live, they tend to vote Democratic.

In the AP VoteCast survey, a large, nationwide poll of people who said they voted in the midterms or intended to, only 46% of self-identified white suburbanites voted for a Democratic candidate, making up about 15% of the share of voters nationwide.

Among white suburban voters, women with college degrees were the only major bloc that backed Democratic candidates more than Republicans. White men with and without bachelor’s degrees, as well as white women without degrees, voted for Republicans more than for Democrats, the national survey found.

Meanwhile, suburban voters of color, who made up about 11% of the voters in the AP survey, voted for Democrats at a higher rate than college-educated suburban white women, who made up about 8% of voters.

This year’s election results showed a widening divide among white voters, as those with higher educational attainment increasingly supported Democrats. But to attribute the party’s gains in the suburbs solely to that shift overlooks the fact that the majority of suburban, white voters voted Republican, according to the VoteCast survey, while suburban voters of color overwhelmingly backed Democrats.

Any national election survey will miss qualities of individual districts. But mapping vote share with districts’ key demographics shows similar patterns.

Yeah and over looked in all of this is they won, like they did in 2006 by lying. The ran a record number of ex military candidates who ran as “a different kind of Democrat, not like those nasty DC Democrats”. They also ran a lot of liars claiming to be “law and order” “God and Guns” candidates knowing full well they are going to go to DC and be Nancy Pelosie’s rubber stamps.

Republicans need to broaden their appeal and not attribute all their losses to fraud.

Dems campaigned mainly on the lies that Republicans were going to take away your social security, Medicare and health care, especially for pre-existing conditions. People who only see the propaganda press never even heard that these claims were all lies.

This “diversity” crap is a lie. There is no diversity in the Black community, not when Black candidates routinely receive 95 plus % of the Black vote. I’m getting tired of the whining about 60-70% of the White vote voting for White Candidates. Without Whites, Obama doesn’t get elected. Maybe the GOP should get it through their heads that Blacks aren’t going to vote R, no matter what they do. Enough of the slobbering and pandering to 13% of the population. The GOP needs to go hard at Hispanics, that’s where the power lies.

"...diversity in the suburbs..."

Just keep endlessly calling white people racists and persecuting decent people...right up until the moment they step into the privacy of the voting booth in 2020...and see how that lever gets pulled.

Broaden their appeal how exactly? Trump is the best friend in the White House that the Black community has ever had. Black unemployment is historically low. Trump could rescue Detroit from the ashes, and they’d still elect Ds.

Soo Ho admits the ‘RAT progs “flipped” the house by importing foreign America-haters and setting them up in the suburbs to cancel out the votes of American voters.

Don't bother with reaganaut1.

It's been NeverTrump forever, and only posts damaging articles about The Hated Cheeto.

It quacks the Uniparty Line from people like "The Mailman" Kasich and his ilk.

The only other way to read this is that minorities who were successful enough to make it to the suburbs are too STOOOOOOPID to vote to retain the policies that allowed them to do that.

I voted straight ticket Republican in the midterms, but the GOP needs a lot more than the base to be a majority party.

if you cannot convice voters to voter GOPE after the 1st two years of the Trump presidency there is no “borading the appeal”

The GOPE has always run on low taxes and economic growth. In 2018 the GOPE types ran on that, and distancing themselves from Trump, and got their asses kicked.

And just like 2006, 2010 and 2012, they want to make the same stupid mistake. “Oh we need to become Dem lite to win”

No, that why people fired the GOPE this year. Since 2010 they have promised to get certain things done and then did NOTHING despite being handed control of the whole US Govt in 2016

Exactly, it was the 2006 playbook all over again. It frustrates me to no end that the voters cannot see that there is no such thing as a “moderate” Democrat on the national stage these days. They are all going to go hard left.

"...NeverTrumper..."

I was previously unaware the OP is a habitual NeverTrumper poster.
Thank you for the clarity on why he/she would post this unflattering article about President Trump with minimal commentary.

In my area, Democrats campaigned on the fact that the GOP has had full control of the Federal government for two years and has accomplished almost nothing. I voted a straight Republican ticket for the first time in my life, but I couldn’t argue with that.

Your #NeverTrump blinders aren't letting you see the big picture.

The KKKrats fixed their Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania election fraud problems.

They upped their fraud game in California, and almost washed over the levees in Florida and Georgia.

The KKrats are more a minority party than the Pubbies. They're just better at The Steal, and half the Pubbies are Uniparty, like you, and make excuses for theft by the KKKrats.
