Bertolucci acknowledged later that the scene was sprung as a surprise on Schneider, then 19, in order to elicit an authentic reaction from her 'as a girl, not as an actress.'

To me, Last Tango seems puerile, amateurish, disjointed, and debasing. I didn’t care a bit about any of the characters, none of which seemed to have any redeeming qualities. I did like Last Emperor.

I love Last Tango, seen it maybe 15 times. It was very controversial. But then again, I’ve also done a little Porn years back, so my opinion might not count. My Mom and Dad went to go see it when it came out in ‘73, because they loved Brando. When they came home, they were in shock and could not even put it into words.
