Trash director with no redeeming value, except The Conformist. And even that was an exercise in style over substance.

I much preferred the sequels:

“Last Mamushka in Latveria”

“Last Polka in Cucamonga”

“Last Turkey Trot in Transylvania”

The Spider’s Stratagem? 1900? The Last Emperor? The Sheltering Sky?

Haven’t seen The Spider’s Stratagem, but 1900 was overrated with totally unnecessary sex scenes. It added nothing to the characterization or the plot.

The Last Emperor won many awards largely due to spectacle, not plot, character or dramatic weight. Time has shown that it was neither influential nor an enduring work. It will be remembered for its pretty pictures, but pretty picture postcards do not make a film.

The Sheltering Sky is decent, even with its deadly dull pacing, but for all the laurels thrown at him, decent adaptations do not cut it.

TLE is much more cerebral and thoughtful than any such “spectacle” film that we would get today. It almost certainly would not be made now.
