Hmm: Can't House Republicans Just Pass Trump's $5 Billion Wall Funding Request?

The answer to the question posed in my headline is 'yes' -- theoretically. The GOP still controls the House of Representatives for the next few weeks, so if (still) Speaker Ryan and company can get their caucus in line, they could simply pass a DHS appropriation that meets the president's full request on wall funding. That would not only fortify Trump's bargaining position and apply pressure to Senate Democrats, it would also embarrass incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who just taunted her Republican colleagues for not having the votes. And the next House Republican leader is telling reporters that he's "100 percent" confident that he does have the votes:

Felicia Sonmez ✔ @feliciasonmez McCarthy tells Fox News tonight that he has the votes for a House bill with $5 billion in wall funding. Q: Are you 100% confident? McCarthy: "Yes, I am."

Paul Kane ✔ @pkcapitol For what it's worth, it's very doubtful that Ryan/McCarthy have 218 votes on their side a gov't funding bill, even one including $5b for the wall. Some conservatives will balk at other spending, moderates will oppose the wall & some midterm losers might not show to vote.

All sorts of journalists who cover Capitol Hill are expressing skepticism over this claim, citing several factors: First, absenteeism. Dozens of lawmakers, including many defeated GOP incumbents, haven't been showing up for work lately. What are the chances leadership can wrangle them back to DC to participate in strategic show votes? Second, resentment. Many of those defeated Republicans, some of whom the president foolishly ridiculed, at least partially blame Trump for their losses...

Today a conservative friend said to me that even if we had a wall, the next Dem president will just open up the gates.

The ‘Cash for Clunkers’ fiasco cost $3 billion.

Elon Musk has received $4.9 billion in taxpayer subsidies.

Apparently, for the same reason they couldn’t do it for the past 2 years, which is partly why they lost the house.

“the next Dem president will just open up the gates.”

That is no excuse for not building one. Ryan’s rinos do not want a wall, that is why it won’t happen. Ryan specifically included language forbidding one inch of new wall in the last CR.

True but we know who opened the gates and punish them in the next election.

No more hiding in the shadows and pretend it wasn't happening.

This is why I no longer support tax cuts for the GOP donor class. Nor for the Gentry libs who run the ‘crats.

Ryan’s not smart enough to pull that one off.

i thougth Trump said the issue was not having enough senate votes?

Because yesterday Pelosi was saying well the House could at least pass it now, and Trump said why waste time to pass in the house if can’t get 60 in senate?

If the House passes the bill, could next year’s senate (with more R votes) pass it? Might work !

I thought the House had already passed $5 billion for border security and the Senate was only offering $1.3 billion.

there is no way any Senate Dem would vote money for a wall unless Upchuckee made them. No mount of pressure will change that ... as far as the House goes Ryan would stop it getting to the floor and, even if he did allow it without the 10 Dems, it would be pointless like all those bills to kill Ocare the House passed.

The short answer is yes. It would die in the Senate.

"Today a conservative friend said to me that even if we had a wall, the next Dem president will just open up the gates."

This is why Pres. Trump needs to work with the states to enforce the 12th Amendment (12A) and Section 2 of the 14th Amendment (14A).

Enforcing 12A will put a stop to unconstitutional state winner-take-all laws for electoral votes.

Enforcing Sec. 2 of 14A will prohibit undocumented Democrats from voting, possibly swinging election outcomes in favor of Democrats by doing so. Note that subsequent amendments have effectively changed how Sec. 2 is interpreted.

Regarding Sec. 2, Pres. Trump will need to make sure that states require citizens to present citizenship / photo id cards in order to vote, the cards needing to be scannable to facilitate Democratic ballot box officials with “poor” eyesight.

Also, off topic, patriots are encouraged to watch Dan Bongino’s excellent 37 min video (associated book). The video helps to flesh out the alleged Mueller conspiracy against Pres. Trump.

A bill has to pass both houses of the same Congress.

I think that Trump is just toying with us, because he hasn’t called out Mitch McConnell. We don’t even know if Mitch supports a wall! McConnell never tweets about immigration, including after the talks Trump had with Pelosi and Schumer. Trump’s best chance for border security was with Paul Ryan’s $1.3 trillion dollar Omnibus spending bill that he signed with no funding for new parts of the wall or security. He had control of both Houses, yet he gave Paul Ryan and Schumer everything. Schumer even said that Trump gave more than Obama!

Tell Congress that the money is for Iran. They’ll pass it quick.
