(CBSLA/AP) — Thousands of teachers who may go on strike against the nation’s second-largest school district next month marched and rallied in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday.

United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) union estimates 50,000 were there.

The crowd had relief from overcrowding at the top of their wish list.

UTLA teachers and supporters wore red for unity. They are seeing red over LAUSD’s reluctance to part with more green.

“I want to see investment in the schools and in the kids,” said LAUSD parent Carmen Montecito.

UTLA says if LAUSD would just tap in to its almost $2 billion reserve fund it could solve a lot of problems.

“It’s unconscionable to hold on to that money acting like kids don’t need it now. We need it now,” said UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl.

If you want to know what predominately Black schools are like, listen to this teacher’s testimony. I concur with teacher’s description, every word of it. https://youtu.be/s1PL3xQu16w

So, if we were to double the salary of every teacher would all students be on the “A” Honor Roll?

It’s stunning these thieves claim students will learn better if only teachers were better paid. Are these awesome teachers “holding back” due to their inadequate salaries? What other jobs do these teachers believe they could do tomorrow that would pay them better than teaching?

They want to retire at 45 instead of 50.

In a just world they would all be fired and the kids would be better off with a new set of teachers.

If they were marching against too many non-English speakers totally destroying any chance of anyone learning anything in their schools, it would make sense. The kids will be better off not in school anyway.

In Broward county they get one sick and one annual day a month, two floating holidays, and your birthday. They can choose between getting a full check for 9 months or 75% all year. Don’t forget all the paid holidays they get off as well. Since their healthcare is provided they never had to participate in Obamacare. The also get a pension that isn’t included in their annual salary, they pay the tax once they retire and start to pull it out. They also had deferred compensation they can use to pull down their annual salary and again pay the tax when it is withdrawn.
Nice little scam they got going!
I think we need a national standard test in 5th, 9th, and12 grade and tie their salaries to that.

What percentage of public school teachers send their own kids to PRIVATE schools? It used to be very large number.

Since LAUSD is terrible how would parents ever know if teachers went on strike?.

Ask Governor Brown to shut down the world's slowest bullet train and redistribute the billions saved from that to teachers.

The time has come for a comprehensive, thorough, and deep-digging audit of California schools.

Every dollar, and every position must be accounted for.

(This would be a major undertaking, and the auditors must not be connected w union thugs or teachers).

If proposed, the teachers and their crooked unions would oppose this with everything they can put forth.

Yes, the teachers want more money and what about the homeless living on the side walks with NO PLACE TO GO?

I don't understand. "No place to go?!" It's still a free country, isn't it? How about Nebraska, or Wyoming? They could go there, couldn't they.

If I were homeless, I sure as heck wouldn't stick around L.A.; I'd go to where the cost of living is low, and I could find a job - any job.

Regards,

“Kids are as dumb as a box of rocks, the schools are more like mental health centers and family crisis baby sitting services than a house of learning”

It is LA County. Feeding them two squares a day is now the Taxpayers responsibility.
