It was a blazing hot day in La Quinta, California, and Irving Berlin was inspired to write a song. Not just any old tune: having completed the lyric, the composer told his secretary he “just wrote the best song that anybody’s ever written”.
White Christmas was not a hit initially. But in 1942, two years after it was written, the song topped the US charts, thanks in part to its popularity with American soldiers stationed overseas during the second world war. It was a hit in Britain, too, perhaps helped by the fact that, unlike swathes of the southern US, we actually experience white Christmases – or at least we used to.
The last “proper” white Christmas – at least in southern Britain – with snow settling on the ground, was in 2010, though in the Highlands snow falls every winter. However, as global warming takes hold, soon the only link with white Christmases may be the famous song.

I was born in northern North Dakota in 1958. Dad said there was no snow at all that winter. Global warming?
I lived in the Seattle area most of my life. Back in the late 60’s we had quite a bit of snow every year, for at least a few years. Then we had a lot of years where there was very little snow, if any. But then the snowy years returned.
It’s cyclical. Always has been. It’s kind of like the ocean waves washing up on the beach. You get a chain of small waves, and then a big one, and then a chain of small waves, and then a big one. It fascinated me when I first noticed it.
I swear western civilization is losing knowledge and wisdom faster than it is acquiring new knowledge.
Even the commenters are not buying this. I very much doubt London ever had vast amounts of snow in December anymore than NYC does. I once was in a “snowstorm” in Dublin in February and you would have thought from the panic in the streets it was the San Francisco earthquake. It was about 1/2 inch.
Here in VA we’ve already had our first snow of the year, and more will come later this month. It’s called “weather cycles.”
I’m in Minot ND. Not so much snow this year and certainly warmer than normal. THANK GOD, because last years string of -30s sucked. We’re owed this.
What is this “snow” everybody talks about?
Perhaps it has more to do with massive immigration, new housing construction, more cars on the road, and the creation of urban heat islands.
The “global warming” nuts want to have it both ways: mass uncontrolled 3rd world migration to the 1st world, but simultaneously wanting a smaller global population to save the planet, etc.
Not possible! The world was at an ideal temperatipure in 1940. Gentle 73 F breezes wafted all over the globe, pretty girls ran barefoot all year 'round, birds chirped all day, and the sky was not cloudy all day.
Of course, in 1940, man was heating things up up in another way in Merry Olde England. Ordinary people were too preoccupied with other disasters to get their knickers in a wad about disappearing snow. I'd wager the guys camped out a few years later at Bastogne would have appreciated less snow.
They need to do a better job at fact checking their story. Berlin wrote it at the Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Brits should be greatful for a warm year as I recall during winters when it is cold and snowy in the UK there are thousands of deaths reported attributed to the cold. The deaths are mostly pensioners who cannot afford to heat their homes. Ironic that the ludicrous attempts to fight so-called global warming lead to higher energy costs, which cause more pensioners to die of cold in normal winters.
I’m looking at a White Christmas tracker and it seems there have been only 10 White Christmases in the south of Englan since 1960... 24 in North England and Scotland pretty much sees them more often than not... especially in the NORTH.
....it’s all about control and $$$$.
That’s funny, cause on this side of the pond, scientists are predicting a cold harsh global warming winter.

Feb of 2014 NY Times article: We could be seeing the end of snow right now
The following winter the NE was hit with record amounts of snow. In the Boston area there were feet of it on the ground.
USA Today, Mar of 2015:
“The National Weather Service said 2.9 inches fell by 7 p.m., pushing total snowfall for the winter of 2014-2015 to 108.6 inches.”
I recall some years ago some moonbats held an anti global warming march in Amherst MA. In March. In a snowstorm.
Even if there isn’t snow there sure can be cold. Huge extremes in weather aren’t due to global warming, global cooling, climate change.
Here in Boston area we got one snowstorm a couple weeks back and it’s just about all gone now, but there will be storms to come. The latest “storm of the century” with blizzard conditions. It isn’t man made. It’s THE WEATHER.
And we little fleas on the face of the planet aren’t creating “climate change”. Tell that to the politicians
flying private jets to big climage change conventions.

The liberal view of this, is that Al Gore and those guys, buy carbon credits, so they are “carbon neutral”, having paid to offset the carbon they are spewing out.
Now we are back to global warming.
Whenever it’s hot, they call it “climate.” Whenever it’s cool, they call it “weather.”
