Arizona governor taps Martha McSally to fill Senate seat once held by McCain

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed fellow Republican Rep. Martha McSally to the Senate, he announced Tuesday, picking a favorite of GOP leaders to fill the seat John McCain held for decades.

McSally, who lost a close race for Arizona’s other Senate seat this year, will succeed Sen. Jon Kyl (R). Kyl will step down at the end of the year following a brief time in McCain’s seat after McCain’s death in August.

“With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility,” Ducey said in a statement.

McSally is expected to run for the seat in a 2020 special election, setting the stage for a potential marquee contest in a battleground state. The seat will also be on the ballot in 2022.

I’m confused, didn’t they just have an election there to fill that seat?

Unf’ingbelievable stupidity. The voters said NO to this RINO with an even worse voting record than Flake, and Dumbass Ducey appoints the bitch anyway. There goes another seat pissed away to the rodents.

No one has ever lost a dime betting on the stupidity of the Arizona Republican Party. McSally will only support Trump as long as it is in HER best interest.

“She” isn’t an A-10.

That the A-10 (or some of its pilots) is a good airplane, or that “it” saved you and many others in combat does not make “her” either a good officer, a good pilot, a good person, a competent person, nor a competent politician.

That “she” is a former military pilot does mean that “she” is a good person, not more than that McCain survived a prison camp make him a “hero”. it makes him a person to be respected for surviving a prison camp. So did many others who faced worse conditions.

I am not sure this was a good decision. I am not sure McSally will do the American people any good in Washington, nor the conservatives any good.

The GOPELites in Phoenix and Albuquerque and Washington? Those, they will do “good” with this appointment.

Disappointing, but predictable. She has a tough row to hoe in future elections when she couldn’t beat Synema.

Basically, with this GOP gamesmenship, she has to win two out a three elections to get a six year term...

Well she lost one, now has to win back to back races?

AZ governor surrendering the seat to slow death to Dems.

She sounds like a great pilot, but very very poor politician.

I predict she crashes and burns again!

Hopefully a better politician beats her in a primary, so we can retire this lady back to civilian life.

Well we might be pleasantly surprised on election night in 2020. She won a very close election to the House in the Tucson area the first time she was elected. Then she was reelected in a big landslide for a second term. The Tucson area is also generally a more liberal region of Arizona, although I don’t know the demographic details of the district she represented. It may have been the more conservative part of Tucson.

But anyway, she seemed to grow on people in the Tucson area as they saw more of her on TV and in person. So hopefully she’ll become more popular statewide as people watch her on TV news. Governor Ducey had to appoint a qualified Republican and someone who wants to spend the majority of the year in Washington, and there aren’t too many people like that in AZ. It’s a long way from Washington and a lot of qualified Republicans don’t want to live out there most of the year. She’s very smart and disciplined and won’t say anything dumb or crazy, and won’t give her opponents any video to use against her. She has a good chance of winning the special election in 2020.

Not exactly. The election held in November was a regular election for Flake’s seat, for a term that will run from January 3, 2019 to January 3, 2025.

McCain died past the date before which a special election would have had to be held in November 2018, so Governor Ducey could appoint a senator to serve until a November 2020 special election (at which time the voters would elect a senator to serve until the end of McCain’s term, i.e., until January 3, 2023). Alas, the senator whom Ducey appointed—Jon Kyl—announced that he will be resigning effective December 31, 2018, so Ducey had to appoint another senator to serve until the November 2020 special election. It is to that seat that Ducey appointed McSally.

Kelli Ward would have zero chance of winning election especially with the fatwa the McPains put out against her.

1)She was winning until they counted the Mexicanest precincts in Phoenix so I’m not so sure she actually lost. This will probably go over better than him appointing his “crony” Kirk Adams. That certain suburban scum that DON’T like President Trump split their votes for Ducey/Enema is not a mark against her.

2)I’m not worried about her losing as the rats don’t have another first-tier candidate that can win a Senate race, especially over an incumbent in a POTUS year when Trump will be carrying the state, no states split their Senate/Pres votes in 2016. (And yes, Enema was a first-tier candidate, remember as far as the wider public knew she was a nice looking moderate not a far-left dyke activist). Ex-RINO Traitor Grant Woods? Not scared of that Focker, and good luck to him in the rat primary if someone Brown and “progressive” runs.

3)Therefore I expect her to vote just fine and to win in 2020. LS makes a good point that having her face the voters again so soon may serve to have her tow the party line, she can hardly afford to Flake out, she’s already been towing the line to point of offending the McPains for not sufficiently worshiping John.
